    I have a realtive coming over from America soon and he was wondering will his laptop be able to be charged off the mains here? Could he buy a cable here and plug it in or will he use his orginal and use a transformer? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

    should be no problem. practically all laptop supplies work on 100-250v at either 50 or 60 hertz. So just check that power supply say it can use 220v 50hz, whuch it should do, and plug it in with the right adapter (no 110v to 220v transformer should be needed)

    Practically all non-US/Japan laptop supplies work on 110V as well as 220V, as adding 110V is nearly free on a 220V unit.

    However it's much cheaper to make a 110V only PSU (lower voltage parts and closer spacing). It could fail or even expose metal parts of laptop to mains.

    NEVER use a North American PSU unless:
    1/ It has CE mark
    2/ It says up to 240V AC 50Hz
    3/ Entire power cable can be replaced with UK or Euro plug. A US twopin adaptor is dangerous.

    A replacement PSU is cheaper and safer than a proper isolated 220V to 110V transformer (the cheap ones are autotransformers and are not safe).
