Music Skips on new laptop...

    Hi lads,

I got my new Dell XPS m1330 only a few days ago and I love it but there is one problem with it....

....when playing a music file in Windows Media Player, Media Centre or even VLC media player, the music will "skip" a little bit from time to time.

I don't think this is anything to do with resources as I have 2gb of RAM and on the occasions in question the media player was the only programme running.

Could this be a sound card issue or is it something more easily rectifiable?

try a factory restore and see what happens. it if continues it could be a hard drive fault i.e. not reading the disc correctly...seen that be the cause a few times before.

You're not using Zone Alarm Suite, by any chance? Its AV shield causes that kind of behaviour. Or at least it did 6 months ago.

Keep an eye on CPU activity (using Windows Task Manager, for example), and see if the skips coincide with spikes in activity. If they do, then you can watch and see what program is causing them.

could be something simple like an audio codec...
Have you tried playing directly from a CD to eliminate the hard drive from the equation?
Have a look at the audio settings in the control panel also.

are you running vista? could be the same problem i had. as i read here, go into control panel, sound settings, and disable all enhancements. worked for me. i've only xp on this machine so can't describe the path fully but you should find it, think it's in advanced settings.
