Uploading to flickr problem on Mac

Using Leopard, I cannot upload images to flickr. This applies to all their uploading tools, and the web based tool for uploading. Once the upload of a 4MB file gets to around 10% it freezes. Doesnt hang the browser or app, or the OS but the upload essentially stops. This was the same on Tiger.

I've tried emailing the files. This only occasionally works.

Dont have my Windows laptop home to test on it, but as far as I remember its ok there on the same wired connection to my Netgear box.

    Very frustrating.

Anything I can do to troubleshoot this on the Mac ? Seems like a networking problem of some sort as it's impacting on multiple protocols including HTTP and email.

    Thanks

To add to this, I tried making a much smaller version of the 4MB file (350kb) and Flickr still wouldnt take the file.

I also tried uploading both the small and large versions to yousendit.com, and that worked fine.

So it seems to be a particular networking issue sending files of any size to flickr, and via several apps and protocols.

    Any ideas anyone ?

What version num of Flickr uploadr are you using?

Im using both the old uploadr and the new beta one, juploadr, web based uploadr, email etc. So its not specific to any one of these. Seems like a networking problem.

Have you any proxies set? Have you tried creating a new network location with basic settings and see if that makes any difference?

I'm not using proxies or DNS. I've tried rebooting my router, setting up my ethernet connection again etc. No joy

I think it's a java or flash issue - sometimes (rarely) i can get the new fancy shmancy uploader to work, but mostly not. The old stylee uploader always works regardless of the filesize, but it's sh1te for batch uploads.

This also seems independent of which browser I use - safari, firefox, opera or whatever you call the other one ... senior moment ... oh yeah, flock.

That would make sense it the old basic form uploader worked or if it worked via email upload. But it doesnt.

So I dont think this is connected with any software. Its either a Mac networking issue or a router issue. What I need help with is troubleshooting it on the Mac.

Have you another router you can try it with? Both wired and wirelessly? Have you tried fecking round with your DNS? There have been some nerdifications on Leopard and DNS recently - look here.

I have a different location setup (as 440 suggested) which has a 3rd party DNS solution - OpenDNS (it's free btw). It has solved some of my networking issues.

    hugh

Have you done anything unusual to the netgear? Which router do you have? Which firmware? Have you tried resetting the bugger?

I had a DG834G last year which just gave up and died. No amount of tinkering made it come back to life - it was the modem part that was fecked, the router seemed to work OK still.

same router. nothing odd in the setup. works great otherwise. tried rebooting, but not resetting all the settings though I did turn off dynamic dns and anything unecessary in my setup. on the latest firmware.

need to verify whether the issue is on the Windows machine. That will help isolate it to the router or the mac.

Just verified - my pc (windows xp) on the same router can upload to flickr no worries, so this is a networking issue specific to the mac somehow.

Still having this issue. Only differences I can spot between the machine that works and the machine that doesn't are:

1). One is a mac, the other is a pc
2). They are on different ethernet cables to each other
3). They are on different fixed IP's on the router

So the only thing I can think of trying is swapping the IP config around so that they get the opposite IP to each other, and then swapping the ethernet cables. Aside from that, they are on the exact same setup and connection.

If this fails, it's something specific to the Mac hardware or software. I guess I can verify that by bringing the machine into work and plugging it into the LAN.

In the network settings in System Preferences click the Ethernet Tab and make sure either Configure is set to "Automatically" or if not that MTU is set to 1500. Also check the MTU in the router.

This definetely seems to be router related. Yesterday I went through a series of troubleshooting steps to identify the source of the issue, including creating new user account with a new uploadr tool install, changing router settings, turning off anything not 100% needed in the router config, changing the cables, changing back to dynamic IPs rather than the fixed one I was using, etc etc and eventually I got this working. The thing that seemed to fix it was the change from the fixed IP on the router to a dynamic one.

When I switched back to the fixed IP, it worked fine. But this morning its at the same old trick again. So I'm off now to set the LAN setup back to dynamic and see what happens. Thing is, I need the fixed IP, so we'll see what happens ...
