What is a Luas SmartCard?
Luas SmartCard is a durable credit card size travel card that allows you to pre-pay for travel on Luas. The recommended retail price (RRP) for Luas SmartCard is €10, which consists of the card cost (€3) and travel credit (€7). This travel credit is split into €3 travel credit for normal use and €4 reserve credit, which allows you to complete one last journey before TOPPING UP at any Luas Ticket Machine.

How do I use a Luas SmartCard?

Luas SmartCard is easy to use. Before getting on Luas you TAG ON by pressing your Luas SmartCard to the front of the validator on the platform. The Validator will show you the balance on your card when you TAG ON. You will hear a tone to let you know you have successfully TAGGED ON. After exiting Luas you should TAG OFF, the same way. There are Luas SmartCard Validators located at each end of the Luas Platform at each stop.

When running low on travel credit you should top-up your Luas SmartCard at any Luas Ticket Machine to ensure you have sufficient travel credit. You can top up by anything between €5 and €100.

I don't understand why, if they are trying to encourage Smartcard use, they can't just give €10 of travel for the €10 paid.

I use the Luas very infrequently, but cannot see if there is any limitation on the credit applied to the Smart Card. Does anyone know is such a time limit exists? It would be handier to have one than rushing for the ticket machine as the next tram approaches!

Thanks for the link. I seen the adverts @ the platforms, but thought you could only buy the discounted cards at weekends, and from the 2 shopping centres. I had checked on the LUAS website about a week ago, but could not find the link you posted, so thanks again!
