    Well lads.
I got a ps3 there yesterday, the 40gb model and a need a few questions answered.

1)Do I have to have to get an internet connection to get the psp to work with the ps3(remote play)? If so does it have to be wireless or cable to the broadband or am I wrong altoghter?

2)Theres a pc on the way aswel with a router, now how do I get internet connection to my ps3 from the pc? I want the ehnternet cable not wireless.
    Heres a diagram:

3)Can I get my psp wireless but keep the ps3 with a cable?

    cheers.

There are 2 versions of remote play.
Remote play using the PS3 as the wireless device. (You have to be near the PS3 for this to work)
Remote play using wireless connection of PSP. Doesn't matter if PS3 is wireless/ethernet connected to internet.

Why not use the wireless capability of PS3 to connect to your new router? Otherwise you have to somehow get a very long ethernet cable and run it to your router.

Are them long cables hard to come by? they will run faster than wireless.

    and heres another question;
4)Can i put stuff from my pc to the ps3?

If your router is a wireless router then you just need tio use the ps3's integrated wi-fi. You may need the routers WEP key(it should be on the router). You could also connect to the router usiing an ethernet cable

Why won't you use wireless? You think its a security risk? PS3 supports WPA2.
I won't be much slower and should have little to no effect with online gaming or downloads.

Yes you can transfer files from PC to PS3.

Dont like wireless, I feel its slower than wired.

Your living in the past, Quit living in the past.....

No difference in online gaming with the PS3 wired or wireless.
I havent checked the download difference to the PS3.
100MB versus 54MB for wireless. Either way you will be waiting a while (Probably overnight like i do) for a fuill game download.

Cable running is a pain in the ass, use the technology provided.:D

how long would it take to put lets say a 700mb film onto it from the pc.
    wireless vs. cable.

You'd should have an ethernet cable that came with the ps3. What i do is use wirelaess most of the time and then, if theres a game a want ot downliad i'll di it using a wired connection. its prob no quiker

    wireless vs. cable.

    100Mb wired = 9MB/sec sustained transfer
    54Mb wireless = 6MB/sec sustained transfer.

This magical 700MB file wouldn't be a film by chance? If so PS3 doesn't play divx/xvid files.

The difference in wired and wireless ,with the ps3 isn't very noticable.

The wifi hardware in the ps3 is very good.

You should just use wireless.(Assuming your router is going to be a wireless one) Cables are annoying when they are all over the house.
Unless you have an internet connection that is running at more than 54mbps(which I seriously doubt), its not going to make a difference for online gaming and internet browsing on your ps3 because you can only go to the maximim speed your interent connection allows.
And for transferring your files from pc to ps3, its not really worth the trouble using ethernet if you have wireless already set up.

So is wireless better? Does it go through walls and up stairs? Maybe 10 metres would it lose strenght?

Will certainly reach more than 10 meters. You will generally get some sort of a signal all over you're house, depending on how thick the walls are and how many walls it must travel through I have a big house and an old 11mbps router thats in the front room of the house and i can pick up a good signal on on the patio in the back garden, in all it has to pass through5 walls to reach me. Ask anyone else here who has a wireless router. They are great, trust me :) As another poster said

Wireless all the way baby! (This from a man who laid RJ45 cables all over a Georgian house and across the street to his neighbour!)

"when" (i.e. not yet, but it's coming) you will be able to play those 700mb files on the PS3 you'll be able to stream them directly from the PC anyway, you don't need to download them to the PS3 first to play them. the same way that since the new firmware 2.0 came out you can stream video from the PSN instead of having to download it first.

I down loaded the 2.01 ps3 update last nite and it took f***ing forever and i had even connected to router using my 20 metre ethernet cable. I'd say it took about 2 hours with my 1mb/sec broadband. Just shows that some things will tkae a hell of a long time no matter if its wired or wireless.

Its not true that wireless will go through everything, Concrete (not brick) walls and floors are a big killer to wireless. My dad is currently building a house where there is going to be a media room in the basement and there is no way wireless will work to its best down there. I think there is still alot to be said for a wired network. I've convinced my dad to put a network point in most/all rooms. CAT5 cable isn't exactly that expensive and it basically guarantees best performance. Also the PS3 has a gigabit etherenet port so its not 54mb vs 100mb its 54mb vs 1000mb(if the device your connecting the ps3 has gigabit ethernet too) Surely things are going to stream more reliably with that

of course it won't go through everything, but if you can get a wireless connection that works okay for gaming it will work fine for odnwloads too. i don't see why people keep chopping and changing all the time. if you have any kind of stable connection then use it if you don't want wires.
