Just wondering if anyone on here knows if there's such a thing as a standard NUJ freelance rate for articles? - ie per 1000 words.

The UK NUJ has a "rate for the job" page where journalists anonymously post what they've been paid.

There's a substantial difference for example between rates paid by the London Independent and the Sunday Independent here.

There's a smaller difference between a magazine owned by Whitespace publishing that I've just written for and the Sunday Independent.

These are for business interview / profile articles.

British papers pay more. There's no standard here because there's variations between national and regional newspaper rates (and the Examiner is classed as a regional newspaper for pay purposes). Even within the nationals there can be a difference of more than e90 per 1,000 words. The thing to do is to agree a rate in advance.

Hhhmmm maybe I'll see if they'll up the rate in the New Year.
