    Hi,
    can anyone direct me to a website that states in simple English the law regarding working hours and rest entitlement.
    My friend is working in a retail store in the run up to Christmas and he's been working up to 15hour shifts.
    Yesterday took the biscuit when he finished at 2am and was back in at 9am.

    Thanks

    You are entitled to 11 consecutive hours rest in any period of 24 hours. In addition you should get 24 consecutive hours rest in any period of 7 days and this should normally follow on from one of the 11 hour rest periods already mentioned. As an alternative your employer can give you two 24 hour rest periods in the week that follows one in which you did not get this entitlement.

    Is this any use to you?

    Thank you both very much, I shall email the link to my friend and hopefully I will hear no more of ridiculous working hours. One of the managers actually said they'd "TRY" and make sure what happened yesterday didn't happen again, bloody chancers!!

    I'm working similar hours at the minute, with an implicit (and very real) threat of replacement if I have a problem with it.

    My employer is arguing that since, in my contract, it stated that I would be required to work extra hours during the Christmas season, I basically sold my friggin' life to them. I don't know what I can do, and I don't want to think that they can get away with exploiting their entire workforce like this. I'm absolutely exhausted, the fact that I'm online right now notwithstanding, and quitting isn't an option for me.

    Help!?

    what kind of hours are you doing?
    did your contract specify how many extra hours?
    Seek advice from your union if you have one or a citizens advice centre.
    You might get a better response in the work & jobs forum.
    Biz -> personal -> work&jobs.

    No, my contract didn't specify how many hours. I've been working there for a few years, and I'm not shy of a bit of extra work, but it's getting really ridiculous now. They get away with it because there's no union and the job is low skill.

    Cheers for the advice, thank you.
