Summer work related to course

Does the college careers advisory service obtain summer work placements for students that would provide experience in their chosen field?

I'm a science student myself and it'd be great if I could get a summer job even remotely related to my course. Even something trivial like washing equipment in a lab would provide valuable insights to what working in a research lab is like.

Anyway just thought I'd ask. Not too optimistic because, as everybody knows, all science graduates end up in Mc Donalds anyway, using their degree to clean up the vomit in the toilets

Yes, there is summer work available in labs. The careers service would be a good place to start, but you could also ask around your department and see if they know anything about it.

Em, I think you're a little confused there... That's the arts students! Didn't you know that all science grads become investment bankers?!

The SURE program in Trinity (and similar programs in other colleges) places students in a research project for the summer. It's unusual though not unheard of for 1st years to get projects, though it would be mostly 2nd/3rd years.

Be sure to ask your lecturers as well. A friend of mine went over to NASA when she was between third year and fourth year. Not in Trinity, but the idea is the same.

I did science and worked in one of the labs in Trinity for the summer between my 3rd and 4th year. It's just a matter of emailing lecturers (or if you prefer arrange a meeting) to ask if they're interested in taking on a summer student. Sometimes they already have funding to take someone on, but others wait until someone who is interested approaches them and then apply for funding. In my experience it seems to be mostly 3rd year student who do it though, but I knew someone who did it in their 2nd year as well. But whatever year you're in, it can't hurt to ask.
