I've started listening to him recently... i liked some smith's songs, so i got a couple of his solo albums. I'm starting to dislike his songs, most of them are really whiny? Anyone else think this ?

Agreed. Genius. Best lyricist ever in my opinion

I wouldn't go as far as the best lyricist ever but he's up there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭Lands Leaving

Out of interest who else would you put up with him?

(Not insulting you for disagreeing or trying to prove any point, I'm just interested.)

John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Phil Lynott (yes i am serious), Tom Waits, Towns Van Zandt, Springsteen and a few others i can't think of.

Sometimes, i just find him too over elaborate. I mean i think the bloke is amazing but i don't think he is the best ever.

a charlatan of the highest order. does not have a decent melody anywhere in his music. and as far as his lyrics go, they are pretentious nonsense.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Excellent lyricist and pick any Smiths song for an example of unusual yet still perfectly wonderful vocal melodies. The music for his solo output is kind of generic but the lyrics more than make up for it.

Well it's a discussion and not a silly list thread. I haven't locked most threads on this forum as most of them are proper discussions.

It's generally innane comments that get threads locked. Like eh this one.

I dont agree with shoever said he does not have a decent melody anywhere in his music. That's plain and simply wrong. If you don't like his music fair enough.

Take any smiths song and it will most of the tim have a good melody and gret lyrics that blend and complement each other. Two easy examples - hand in glove and shoplifters... Or Panic now that i think again...

LordGoat your totally correct, the simths/missery may have good tunes/lyrics/songs.
I still despise them, and you probably hate the bands that i like and thats fine with me;i can take it on the chin.
It doesn't bother me,but i know from experience that slagging off the Smiths/Missery they(fans - fanatics) feel that they have to defend them, why?
Shouldn't the music do the talking?

Well you are posting in a Morrissey thread on a discussion forum, of course people are going to defend their opinion.

I can see what you're saying but i just disagreed mainly with the melody comment. My point was that even someone that does like them should be able to note a melody when they hear one. I normally would have ignored you but in this case you were completely wrong ergo the reply.

I don't understand why you'd waste your time and energy in annoying people about there music. Does it serve a purpose? A positive one? Seen as you can agree with me but still dislike them does that not make your arguments kinda dull for you?

No not at all, that's how i get my kicks goathead.
    Heaven knows your miserable now.

On the melody point-i could fart out a good melody-that's not where the talent is.

I'm a pretty big Morrissey fan, I'm going to see him 3 times in London this coming January and I can't get enough to be honest. I have over 50 cds etc. I've heard the same old arguments against him being depressing and what have you, well look at how successful he is, and how much he is worshipped, doesn't that tell you a little something about how depressing life in general is?

Morrissey is a true original, an extremely talented singer and lyricist, with an amazing intellect and stage presence. There's very few people you can say that about.

In the early 90's I think it was he sold out Madison Square Garden in about 30 minutes, that was faster than Michael Jackson and Madonna in their heyday, only 1 to sell out MSG faster were the Beatles afaik. just 1 example of his popularity

yeah i can see where you're going when you say over elaborate, maybe I'll change my stance to MY favourite lyricist.

He's a fantastic, humorous lyricist and an underrated singer, but I feel that his solo work (although I love some of it) doesn't musically match up to the Smiths. He's never really replaced Marr as a collaborator.

Hes great, I think the hubby models himself on him, mind you hes doing a bad job lately, seeing a guy in a yellow tracksuit and red sneakers singing "how soon is now" as he bumbles out to work is rather uninspiring and criminal if you ask me

Fair play to you, that is so cool! Do you think he will announce any Irish gigs, I know that it is pure hyperbole and speculation at this stage but he is playing Doncaster and Sunderland ffs! ;)

I really hope he plays here, I'm pretty optimistic that he will, seeing as he's doing a string of UK dates...fingers crossed! I've seen him six times now and each time has been amazing! Keep an eye on http://www.morrissey-solo.com and http://www.true-to-you.net for updates :)

It would be class alright wouldn't it, he often just nips over to Dublin for a gig or two in the middle of an English tour so I don't see why not, he feels at home here too so fingers crossed!

This English tour is very odd. VERY surprised that there are no Manchester dates.

Yeah true, then again knowing Moz he could announce a Manchester date at a drop of a hat with 4 weeks notice.
What does everyone make of the Greatest Hits tracklisting? The only 2 things I'd complain about are "In the Future When All's well" being on there and "November Spawned a Monster" not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭tech77

Morrissey is great. Morrissey and Marr together though were sublime.

Can't help feeling how Marr's brilliant jangly guitar playing would make his plaintive voice sound so much better.

Well, perhaps Merck's statement on Truetoyou really is true true - maybe he will tour properly in March.

I haven't paid any attention to the Greatest Hits album to tell you the truth. I will probably buy it just to get the 2 new songs though. MUCH more excited about the new album in the autumn! :D

I saw him in Galway about 9 years ago, i couldnt figure out what the hell he was doing down this part of the country. It was equally brilliant and hilarious.

At the end, the crowd invaded the stage and some poor ejit of a girl got her top ripped off by a bouncer. Poor auld Morrissey got an eyeful.

I'm a huge Smiths fan!! I think they are absolutely amazing!!! It's totally obvious why he's such an influence to tons and tons of bands.

In December I was pretty psyched to see him on the cover of NME. I'm Canadian and never read NME until I moved here so I didn't know the background to the whole NME/Morrissey feud. After the article I was really dissapointed by some of his comments - especially being an immigrant myself. Did any of you guys read it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 826 ✭✭✭vibrant

Well, I read it online and also read all the backstory to it on both Morrissey-Solo and truetoyou (links above). Morrissey's response to the story is still up on TTY. He was set up by the NME - again. They came out of the incident looking a lot worse than him - especially considering that Time Jonze was trying to scrounge concert tickets from Morrissey's manager during the whole thing. It backfired because apparently that issue didn't sell as good as it normally sells, and their journalistic "integrity" was called into question (ie, they have none).
