As the title suggests, I'm looking for a good e-book reader. I've heard the kindle is out/ due out soon, has anyone any idea how good it is? Also, Sony have a few readers out as well, but afaik they're only compatible with connect e-books.

I have a fair few e-books on my pc, but not a fan of reading em off the screen. Any help would be appreciated!:)

The Kindle is supposed to be pretty flip hot, though IMO from pics its as ugly as heck. Mind you, it could be a joy to hold, so you never know.

The biggest benefit to it is the ability to buy books and download them immediately without having to connect to a computer or hunt for a WiFi hotspot. They manage this by buying up time from a telephone operator and connecting through their network. They also apparently have a lot of the major publishing houses converting their new releases and back library to the Kindle format (closed, DRM'd format. No PDF, no ebook standard).

Unfortunately, its not available outside the US yet, and (according to Amazon) sold out very shortly after becoming available to order.

Bumping this up as just thinking of getting one of these - they look great but wondering if anyone has gotten on and if so what they thought of it, is it as good as reading print. I don't know anyone that has one or where to even get it in Ireland but I read 2/3 books a week so would be a good investment for me

    Anyone help?

I don't own an eBook reader at all, but the general consensus (see the comments section of this engadget post is that the Sony ones are better, since they are open, support PDFs etc.

I own an e-book reader. Bought one for the wife too.

Here is my take on it (from the review section of my Irish news site www.unitedpeople.ie )
I bought a Sony Reader as I wanted to catch up on all the books I have missed out on for a while now. After getting one, I tried it out ...and it was worth it.
They are a joy to use. The buttons are designed to be used by right-handed and left handed folk. Its light and compact. It takes all types of document formats and its dead easy to use. One of the nice features is when you switch it off and eventually turn it on again, it goes right to the page you left it at. It can play music too by the way with headphones!

I have managed to make my way now in three weeks through five books, its that easy to use. I have loaded it up with books that I want to read and I know know where they all all. Its also useful for research. I have many, many manuals on it referring to subjects that concern me. Its nice to know that at a moments notice they are all at my finger tips for any immediate help I need at any moment.

It comes supplies with a very nice cover in which it hinges internally on. You get also a cd with 100 free books. The free books are mostly classic books but even that is a good start. If you can get your hands on one - do so. They are worth it if you are into books and/or wish to save a lot of carrying of paper books manuals. For those that love books and go through them very quickly, this is an ideal gift for yourself.

The reader will take doc/RTF/PDF/TXT/LRF formats as well as others.
For the more specialised formats, there is converters out there now too for them.
Any questions on the E-reader, ask away.

By the way, there are sites out there that provide you will all the books you want.
With a sd card into a slot on the reader you can increase its capacity to make it hold up to 16,000 books.
(I only have 800+ on mine at the mo)
The text on them is pin sharp. Easy readable no problem.
The screen is also designed that even with sun glare you can read the pages.
