Gentlemen, if ever you were to buy something from the states (or from Japan but pay in dollars ;)) then now is the time, I can't see this exchange rate being allowed to last for long.

It's absolutely great for Irish or Uk people buying from the USA* but it's going to kill our export market and our tourist market. American's are paying 25% more for every Euro than they were 2 years ago (23 November 2005 €1=$1.18)
That means that an American tourist coming to Ireland will find the going very tough. I did read about this Irish travel company reducing the exchange rate based on some forward buying of dollars. They have reduced the 25% mentioned above to 14% but how long can that last? especially if the euro goes towards $1.60???

*I'm going to Boston next week where the shopping is great and the sales tax is much lower than in New York.

Noone is questioning the long term negative impact it could have, especially in a country as dependant on foreign investement such as this but, as the saying goes, make hay while the sun shines ;)

US consumers are being very careful with their disposable income too, which makes it a doubly good time to buy used stuff from there. I've seen guys practically give away fantastic gear because of how difficult it is to sell high-value guitars/amps over there at the moment.

can u only pay by credit card or can you do cash on delivery with the american companies

Highly unlikely an american company will allow COD. Few european shops even allow it (musicstore is one of those few)

This morning would have been a great time to buy.
Guitar Center ran a sale from 8 to 10am for 20% off on any single item in the store.
I could have gotten that $900 Schecter Synyster Custom for just over $700.

Unfortunately, I have the day off and woke up at 9:30. :(

actually some are forecasting it to get even lower. i hear 1.52 mentioned by sometime mid February as a possibility... America's in a bit of a pickle, their currency is buggered and i can't see what they can do to rekindle it...

You don't, generally. A lot of the US stores don't ship internationally.

hmm not so sure that a lot don;t ship outside USA........

I bought my first Zildjian for the current kit from www.theguitarcentre.com actually found em that time on EBay selling stuff and after a few emails to the guy running the show and me asking/plauging him to ship to me if i paid shipping etc...he agreed to do it....and it duly arrived a 3 weeks later $220 delivered :) as opposed to E390 in the shops here......sooo sometimes it pays to mail them or ring them if you have the ol' "free work phone" ;)

talk to these people and many will do ya a favour...after all business is business.

www.music123.com - did me a good job too
www.samash.com - usa deliveries....but again maybe a chit chat could get it to you
www.musiciansfriend.com - again same as samash
www.midwestpercussion.com - deffo deliver around the world
    www.ruppsdrums.com - same as midwest

there are others..check em out give em a buzz and do business..after all...all they can say is yes or no?..so whats the hassle with that:)

    happy trading amigos.....Baggio........................

The economists where i work reckon it won't break $1.50 and will prob go back to about $1.30-35 next year and back down into the 1.20's after that. Don't what this is based on but ye....

It will keep falling, have no worries about that.

In the meantime......Get while the gettin's good !!

Great find Baggio, have you bought much stuff from the US before?

I bought a set of Zildjian Custom A's/K's from Musicians Discount Warehouse ages ago at a fraction of the cost that you'd get them here. Plus, they came in the proper Zildjian bags and weren't the display models shops tend to palm you off with here.

I think they're largely concerned with the difficulty of returns. Also, they're usually bound by dealership agreements that prevent them from selling certain brands outside the US. It seems to have become a lot stricter in the last two years. But as you say, it's definitely worth trying to negotiate! :)

    I've used music123.com.

Ordered guitars, strings, software. Never a problem even when they messed up an order and i had to return it. Id back them for US online sales tbh.

I wouldn't. They ****ed up my order. Due to a "clerical error" the ship to address on my order magically changed (yeah because clerical errors change the address to an entirely different country and make the phone number "5555555555"). So I called them up. They told me everything was ok. Then they still shipped it to the changed address in Alabama a few days later. So I called them up. They told me they'd stop it being delivered. They didn't and it was delivered to the other address. Then they told me they'd get it back. They didn't. It took two stressful months of me phoning them asking where my grands worth of gear was and, in the end, it was only after I threatened legal action that they agreed to ship me a replacement.

Do a search for the thread, I was posting here as the whole unbelievable episode was going on. One of their management types posted here with the usual lip service but, in my experience, their customer service is ****ing useless.

    Never again.

Well that is bad. But i never had a problem. Even with very large items like double bass type guitars. They do a great deal on bass strings sometimes. I got 5 EB MM SS for the price of 1. But i guess all online stores have there moments. 2 months....!
