Following on from the purchase of my new camera (see seperate thread...) I would like to do some beginner lessons so that I know what all the little buttons on the top actuallly do. I understand knowing the difference between white balance and focal length will make me rich, successful and happy. So the following looks good, does anyone know anything about it?

    Thanks

    Hi there,
well here's my 10 cents worth.......I doubt if all will agree!

you have purchased a G9 - almost full SLR functionality digital camera. The course you listed seems comprehensive but also covers darkroom work....it may be worth checking out with the tutor how much darkroom / film printing/enlarging the course entails because it is not very relevant to your needs at this time. (based on what you have posted) The course may insist you have a film SLR so worth checking...although they are very cheap to purchase if you choose that route.

Before embarking on a basic photography course I would heartily recommend getting a decent book and having a play yourself to get familiar with the camera and it's abilities. I think you would get a lot more out of a photography course with a decent grounding in basic photography principles and terminology - John Hedgecoe's New manual of photography is a great starter book that I found invaluable when starting out. (good read and non-scientific approach to explanations unlike others I could mention)

Whatever you decide I hope that you and your camera have a wonderful relationship!

    Best of luck!

The Interweb is full of resources & tutorials. Combine that with a good book, as suggested above, & you should be on the pig's back.

Digital Beginners run some very good courses focused on digital photography. I'd say give them a look over. www.digitalbeginners.ie
