Apart from these bad boys, I have a 1992 Ibanez Jem. Its black with neon green inlay, pickups etc. Bought it when i used to live in oz and for some reason it plays like a dog. The pickups are standard D'marzio which sound terrible - palm mute is not existant, the floyd is a monster of a thing and is very slow to return to position making the tuning impossible. The action is too close and my hair is pulled out trying to correct this.

Can anyone recommend a store that has a good reputation for not only fixing the correct problems, but giving advice on how to improve the spec of the guitar and more importantly, having a little respect for the customers property instead of having it returned to find additional dings or hidden marks on the guitar.

After having the Dimebucker installed on the Washburn Stealth, it was returned with a ding and I went fookin mental. Without mentioning names, I was gutted and will never return to that particular outlet again.

If I cant get it right, I'll end up flogging the thing and buy a K7 just to get the lower notes. Advice on types of humbucker for heavy sounds (that will fit the jem cause the dimebucker doesn't!), do i need new springs for the floyd??

    Bah, confused already.
    Help very much appreciated.

If it's a 15 year old Jem, chances are it needs more than a quick setup. If it was mine, i'd strip it down completely and you'd be looking at things like checking for a warped neck (common with early Jems/RGs), rising tongue (caused by moisture getting into the neck through the bolt holes, fret-level/refret, replacing/re-shaping the knife edges on the trem. Yadda yadda....there's a lot of work that could be done tbh. To get the guitar playing 100% could mean plenty of work and new parts.

Most guitar shops and service guys wouldnt have a clue what they were doing in most of those areas, i'd recommend dropping it into to someone good like Derrick Nelson (contact details in the resources sticky) for a full service.

If you don't like the sound of the pickups, change them, simple as that, but definitely keep the originals.

Cheers VooDoo, might just bite the bullet and try get rid if this is the case. It is beginning to show its age in terms of playing although the bodywork is 95% perfect. But sure I could do without the nightmare of having to source this and that just to make it sound right.

Dunno, I think there's no harm in mentioning names when it's an honest account of your experience.
