Beginner Lens advice

Just bought a Canon 400D and need some advice on lenses. Nothing too fancy, just something with better zoom then the stock lens. I've already got advice on a 50mm f1.8 for shooting in low light/gigs etc, so I guess I'm just looking for another lens for maybe longer distance work, the odd journo snap etc. I'm a bit lost at the moment having made the jump from an ixus to the 400d, so bear with me and my ignorance.

I like the Canon 17-85mm and I use it on my 400D. I can't praise it enough. Small, light, fast, great shots. It's a bit pricey (~ €400), but I personallyfeel it's worth it.

Did you use a 400D on most of your flickr pics? They're pretty excellent. Hmmm... €400 is rather pricier then I was thinking, but maybe. Is it an all round lens or is it kinda designed for something specific?

My 2c is don't underestimate the kit lens :p 80-90% of my shots have been taken with the US version of the 400D (Rebel XTi) At the moment, all I have is the kit lens, 50mm f/1.8 and 75-300mm f/4-5.6 [and a 2x telezoom multi, macro filter-thingy..and other various things like so]

the 17-85 does seem to be a good lens from many peoples opinions..

Yeah, the 400D was used in all my pics since Feb/March of this year bar the infrared ones. €400 is a lot, but it does cover a wide range, and I even used it for a wedding. It's great wide and great zoomed, but it's got a bit of a personality complex; it's not a wide angle and not a telephoto, but does both quite well. I justify the cost by the fact that it's one of the most versatile lens's available.

Ah, maybe I am underestimating it... I haven't used it much, I guess I'm just biased from people saying things like "just buy the body, don't bother with the stock lens" etc.

Hmmm... super versatile lens DOES sound good. I'll have to check it out once my bank balance recovers from buying the camera :D
