Macro Question...

As I eagerly await my macro lens (26 days to go), I've been looking at a way of increasing the magnification ratio beyond 1:1.

The options I've found are adding extension tube(s) or adding a screw-in dioptre (Canon 250D/500D).

Does anyone have experience with either of these two techniques? I'm not trying to achieve MPE-65 results, but looking to stretch magnification a bit further...

I think the extension tubes will give you a better result.

Don't forget though, with the extension tubes you're DoF is only teeny weeny! Its not too big a deal, just something to be aware of.

I've got the 250D on an EF-S 60mm macro and it enables the lens to focus as close as 2 inches (give or take).

Here is a link to one I took with this setup. I also used a ringlite flash.

    Hope this Helps

all macro photography has to deal with paper thin DOF anyway...
remember that using extension tubes you're no longer in AF (but anyway, in macro you'll be doing manual focus or moving your tripod even if you have AF)

I find focusing becomes a lot easier if you close the aperture to between f9 and f16. f32 is not bad if you have enough light.

Yikes, that's a crazy shot! Which ring light did you use? I suppose that'll be my next buy :p

Sorry. Forgot to put a warning.... ;)

It's the Canon Macro Ring lite MR-14EX. The shot wouldnt have been possible without it. It was pitch black at the time. The flash has a dead handy focusing lamp.

Tubes are great :D I was using elven's for my nifty fifty at donadea, and I've got a screw on - macro filter like thing.. works well anyway, can use it with my kit lens & 75-300 :)

you could always use a reverse mounted lens aswell, e-bay have the reverse rings for a few pounds! but i agree that tubes are great but don't try and save money by buying the cheap rubbish, go for the ones that have the proper connections. I use a set of Jessops tubes that were about £75 (if i remember rightly).

This was taken with a set of Tubes attached to a 105mm sigma macro lens:

and this was taken with the tubes and a 50mm reverse lens with the sigma lens:

And finally this is my rig :)

Good luck with whichever way you decide to go :)

    Hey tr331o,
Are you related to Heath Robinson? He would have been proud of that set-up.
    Love it!
Off-shot is a set of gym equipment needed to build up your strength to lug that around. Loved your macro shots, did you get 20 million copies done for the fly to give to all his children. He must be pleased with the photographs, I think you got his good side.
    Well done!

LOL nah no relation to heath robinson ;) Thanks for the comments, luckily for me the fly flew off before it gave me any conact info so i couldn't send the copies to it's family ;)

I am not at liberty to say how much the setup cost as the wife may find this board and then divorce would be imminent :)
