    Hi lads,
Looking for a cheap mountain bike (Cork Dublin or online) for getting to and from work, nothing special (At all!) had a look on buy and sell but people are asking a bit too much for them! I heard about smiths but i don't know myself.
    Thanks
    Gary

What is your budget and how far is the daily commute. A cheap bike is a false economy. I wouldnt buy one for less than 400 new.

    www.chainreactioncycles.com are good & cheap.

Was thinking less than 150, it's only about 3 miles to work.

I understand that it might be a false economy to buy a heavy piece of ........ but I don't want to break the bank for a 6 mile round trip?

Halfords have adults mountain bikes reduced from €260 to €130 plus €30 accessories free if you buy before 12th dec ....lights and lock perhaps...

Sorry, but that one looks rubbish.

All that suspension and stuff is just for show, it usually doesn't work, but adds lots of extra weight and likely to attract thieves.

If you max budget is €150 then try and buy a commuting bike with no suspension and fancy stuff like that and some slick tires.

Never buy off them. My missus spent €400 on a bike there. I fell apart.

Brought it back & they said it was her fault. W*nkers

Only trying to be helpful.......... I am quite sure they sold thousands of bikes last year they can't all have fallen apart ....the guy only wants a bike for a short commute, if he stats to listen to all the negative stuff on here he would never buy ,

Toy city (World of Wonder) have a bike for 99euro also but doesn't have the suspension etc (maybe a good thing) the Smyths one has.

At 150 your only option is second hand in my mind. The gardai have auctions of stolen bikes. As mentioned- at that price range suspension is just for show, they are "confirmation bikes". Ok to go a few yards down to the shop on once a week. 3 miles both ways is 1500miles a year, 5 days, 50x 5day weeks, 250days.

You will be spending a long time in the saddle, people would think nothing of a extra grand on a car.

I have my bike well over a year now, €600, 1 year bus fare would have been 250daysx€3, €750. God knows what a car would have cost with petrol, insurance, service, deprecitaion, tax etc.

Seriously, it is a false economy, it will be falling apart, needing repairs, and you have to suffer the low quality in the saddle. A good bike is a joy to ride.

If you still insist on a cheap new bike I would get this

    http://chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20675

It will need assembling, anybody with any bike knowledge could do it, or a shop would for a few quid. Free delivery from them. Dawes is a repectable brand but even so at that price dont expect miracles. It is a hybrid bike, more suited to commuting than a mountain bike, and more comfy and stronger than a racer.

Bit of an over reaction surely? It was only a bike....

As an owner as one of these, let me tell you it's a piece of ****.
The staff are monkeys and there was parts loose on it when I was given it.
And charged €10 for this assembly
And the gears seized three weeks later.

They are popular and you see many around but don't buy one.
The Dawes bike that rubadub posted looks interesting, a good deal

If a second hand bike interests you, there are a few for sale in the sports/fitness category on adverts.ie

You would'nt go into a bike shop to buy a toy so don't go into a toy shop to buy a bike!!:D

Spend money, my 1989 raleigh is still flying strong and looks every bit as good as a modern yoke.
