Right, I just bought a new monitor for my PS3 (since my old one won't work becuase of the HDCP thing). I just noted that it only has a D-Sub and VGA connection. As the norm is HDMI to DVI will I be able to use the monitor at all:confused:

You can get a DVI to VGA converter.

Thanks. Below is the link to the monitor. Anybody have any experience with it? It says it's HDCP compliant so I presume that there shouldn't be an issue.

If you are connecting into the VGA port then it will be problem I think, as VGA can't deal with HDCP, only DVI and HDMI can.

If you want to use your PS3 in HD mode your going to need a display that can input digital video signals. You are going to need a display that inputs HDMI (digital) or DVI-D (digital). An analogue signal (i.e. DVI-A or VGA ) are not going to work as analogue signals are not suitable for HDCP.

There may be some expensive-ish devices around that will convert the PS3 output into an analogue signal for you but your really best to just get a display that can take a digital input supporting HDCP. I think every device on the market for the last year at least that supports digital input will do HDCP no problem. Even if you buy some expensive device that may convert things to VGA for you you are going to loose a huge amount of display quality and may as well just use the composite output.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on,

HDMI-DVI-VGA will not work... For a PS3 anyway......

possibly a silly question, but why not just buy an LCD TV?

I'm currently renting and it's for my room so I just wanted something small. I just checked my current monitor and it has a DVI-D and D-Sub connections. I'm just going to assume that the PS3 won't work on it as it is a couple of years old (Oct 2003).

Check your TV model online to find out if it works with HDCP - you can definitely do HDMi->DVI-D, and if your TV support HDCP you will be ok.

isn't HDCP just for particular HD content that specifically requires it (i.e. probably none yet) rather than the devices it is running on?

i wasn't aware that the PS3 had any HDCP enabled content yet. I thought it was just one of the many things that were in the pipeline?

I am currently using my monitor with my PS3. My monitor only has a VGA connection. Your best bet is to buy the component cable for the PS3 which is what I did.
You can then buy a component to VGA adaptor. This way you will get HD and not have to worry about HDCP as component is an analogue connection.
This is the kind of adaptor I am using at the moment. Picked it up for a tenner but you can probably get them on Ebay cheaply.

Sounds good. Where did you get the VGA/ Component adaptor?

I picked my up mine up from a guy over on adverts.ie but Ebay is probably your best bet. I haven't seen any for sale in any shops such as Maplins.
