Had a pro come around to my place of work a while back to take my photo for an article about my work.

The guy turned up with a 1D Mk3, loads of lenses etc, took about 50 shots inside and outside.

Picture used in the paper this week turned out to be really soft, kind of thing I would probably delete. No way would I submit a shot like that for printing.

I can't believe he didn't get a sharp shot with all that he took so what am I missing? Can a professional printing process reduce sharpness?

If it was in the paper, possibly. Depends on his workflow too.

    How soft?

Quite soft. More than I would normally attribute to the transition to printed paper. Interesting thing was that some other staff were also photographed and the shots were much sharper. I'm no oil painting but I don't think I need blurring

looking at again I'd say 2 stops
