Which Active PA Speakers?

    Hi,

I’m hoping you can help me with this.

We are buying a PA for our working cover band. We are doing more gigs but still are borrowing/renting someone else’s PA.

I have decided to go Active direction because of speaker/amp matching and the ease of use.

We play mid/small size venues at the moment but hope to move to larger gigs in future.

The drums are not miked at the moment, no need, but in future we would like to have the option.

3x Vocal mikes, Keyboards, a Line 6 Bass unit and a Line 6 guitar POD are run through the PA at the moment.

Our budget for the mail L/R speakers is €500 per unit- €1000.

I am leaning towards one of these 2 models judging by reviews -

    Or

The main difference for me is the Samson has a 15 inch Speaker no I assume more bottom end?

We plan to buy some Active bass bins in the New Year and I think that should be a fairly powerful/ flexible set up

Right now a pair of these speakers will get us through the venues we are playing I think, if the blurb is to be believed.

Any opinions about the speakers or other suggestions appreciated!

    thanks:)

Out of those 2, defo the Yamaha. For a better option slightly over your budget have a look at Mackie SRM450 they are the SM58 workhorse active speaker.

If you plan adding subs anyway, there's no real need to go for 15" tops too.

Yeah I was kinda figuring that about the Samson, thanks.

Im really liking what Im reading about the MACKIE SRM 450's

    Some good reviews, €€€€ tho:(

I haven't heard those ones, but I've never been terribly impressed by Samson in general, and Yamaha are consistantly reliable, so I'd also suggest the Yamaha. I admit that it's down to a brand bias though.

In free space a 15" driver will reproduce lower frequencies than a similar 12", but in practice there are a lot of other factors. The volume of the cab can actually be more important. I don't think the driver diametre is too much of an issue here really, especially if you're planning to add subwoofers.

Thanks Eoin, I had heard that there is not much differnce between 12 or 15 inch thesedays, explains why the samsons are the only 15 in I could see!

I think Im leaning twoards the MACKIE SRM 450's, we are having a meeting tonite and Im gonna push for spending a bit more on the speakers, I have a feeling they are a good bit better than other models in its range. Its the most important bits of the PA I suppose!
