Computer startup problem

Not too sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes anyway.

Basically my PC froze while I was on the internet and I pressed the reset button. When I turned it back on I got a message saying that windows did not start successfully and to select one of the options below (safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start windows normally). None of these options work, it keeps coming back to the same screen.

I've checked the setup and it appears to be a POST problem. Anyone know what I can do to get it running again?

Are you getting any error messages in the POST? If so what are they?

When you say it keeps coming back to the same screen, Do you see Windows trying to load first and then the System Loops and reboots bringing you back to the Startup Options?

A number of things can cause this issue, One of them being a corrupt profile on the PC. Have you any way of backing up your HD? Maybe setting it up as a Slave on another PC and backing it up.... You might be able to remove your old profile this was and create a new one the next time you boot up.

It may also be due to Patching or upgrading, Have you downloaded and New Patches or upgraded the Hardware lately?

What OS are you using, I presume it's Windows XP or Vista.......

I'm getting error messages in the POST but I don't know how to show what they are.

    Yeah, exactly that.

    It's XP.

Would I be able to use a memory stick to back up the HD? Don't know what as slave is...

Haven't made any hardware or upgrade changes recently.

For what it's worth this thread is the same problem that I have.

If one of the boot files boot.ini, ntldr, etc (I forget which one)gets corrupted you get this reboot cycle you've described. If you've got the XP install disc you can do a repair install which would possibly fix the problem.

I have the disc but I thought you lose all your files if you do that?

u lose everything if you format your disc. I'm not sure do u lose everything in My Documents etc. if you repair/reinstall windows... i hear some people sometimes do...

I have run a Repair from the Installation CD a number of time and have never lost any files.....

Here is the procedure for running a Repair from a CD...

    Boot from CD
It will give you a number of choices, including Repair or Install Windows..
Do not pick the Repair option at this time, Choose to Install Windows,
At this point it will search for a Previous Installation of Windows,
When it Detects your Windows Installation, it will ask if you want to repair this Installation
    Choose Yes
It should then go into Auto-Mode and Repair....

    Hope it works for you.

Or you could select the first option in the post above and run chkdsk /r from the prompt.
