Getting XP back on a Vista laptop.

So my laptop died over the summer and I bought a new one from Dell.
It comes with Vista Home Premium, Dual Core processor (2@1.86ghz) and 2 GB RAM. Despite this I'm not happy with the performance.

How might I go about installing XP? I'm sure it would run like a dream with the specs.

If a restore CD came with your old laptop, you could use that, and also the COA that would be on the bottom of the old laptop, failing that theres not many options but to buy a version (or hunt for a cheap OEM one off Komplett maybe)

Just to let u no, a friend of mind had to revert back to XP from vista for college, and some aspects such as video and audio wouldnt work on the laptop til they got some sort of update, or rollback?? (not entirely sure)

I have exactly the same issue. Slow dell vista laptop.

Thing is dell won't necessarily give you XP drivers. They may say they don't exist, but some people have been able to find similar laptops from dell with the same hardware, running XP. So you need to download the drivers from the dell support page for those laptops. Takes a while but could work out well if you do some research.

Would the standard drivers from the manufacturers not work in laptops? I know they can be pissy WRT graphics card drivers, but what about the chipset (all Intel or ATI in Dells AFAIK), audio, wireless (mostly/all Broadcom or Intel), etc.?

Should try doing a dual boot.
Had same problem when I purchased a Vaio in September, I couldn't find a laptop that came with XP which I needed for my all music projects, so I did a Dual Boot, it took me 2 days to successfully do it and it is a charm.

And since monday, Now I have a tri boot with Ubuntu added and no problems.

    Hope you get it sorted!

What's the deal with dual booting Vista and XP? Do you have to install XP first?

Na, Well I can only speak personally regarding this machine as every machine will be different, I had Vista preloaded on this Vaio.
I shrink ed the drive through Vista and partitioned it.

You need a few tools, NLite for integrating the relevant SATA drivers for the XP Disc.

And also Vista DVD, to repair the MBR.

And Easy BCD to sort out the Boot after installation.

Google is your friend, and like everything, back everything up, research on all the drivers, hardware, etc to see if they are XP drivers, etc.

Though I am really happy with what I have, I use Vista for net, day use and Xp for DJing and Music production which is a bare bones system.

Again, Research, Time, Patience and Back Up.
