NCW now more dangerous than Limerick City

NCW seems to have gone mad in the last few years. It was never the safest place on a saturday night, but lately there seems to be a huge escalation in violence, random attacks drugs etc and NO ONE is being done for it. Men and women in their 50's and 60's being beaten up walking Knockane or Bothar Bui,
Certain Pubs becoming no zones, Trouble "Central" if you get me........
NCW is gone much worse than ever and because its a small town, people in general are much more vulnerable than they are in a big city.
NCW is a town dying on its feet.

Got to agree with you there.. the town is depressed, violent and bleak. There's always trouble outside the niteclub. I would walk down O'Connell St, Limerick City at 2am anytime before I'd do that in NCW!

own was never great but turning point has been the change of hands of a couple of pubs in the one street, all the scum bags in the town are drawn to the same couple of pubs like pubes in a shower drain. the one pub in that particular street that used to get a lot of slack is now a pargon of virtue (in comparison). only one or two pubs you can go to for a good pint and a bit of craic without showing the bus pass. out of town on a saturday night is the best optoin for most right thinking people and i agree with the other poster, i wolud feel safer walking o'connell st at night than maiden st or sheehans road after 10 at night. then again not a shade in sight after dark in town, had to laugh today - shade on a bicycle tooling around town about 4 o'clock, people roaring at him out of car windows - what the f**k can he do about anything, where will he be at 2 tonight - not outside the disco & that's for sure - what a country.

I don't go out in Newcastle any more, its just become too rough and Whispers is like something from the 1970s......the place should be levelled. In the past i've seen plenty of nasty fights both outside the Motel and in the Square, and on most occasions there will be a garda presence there, but they seem content to watch events unfold and not intervene......typcial Newcastle guards really, passive to the extreme.

Newcastlewest is gone to the dogs all right. Regularly hear of people getting robbed by the river way, getting kicked till they are unconscious outside the motel, bouncers getting attacked ect. Wounldn't go near the place on a Saturday night anymore

I left the town close on 4 years ago now and while I miss home I'd don't think I could ever move back to ncw again. What i have noticed on my visits back to the west is the proliferation of scum around the town at all times of the day or night. I must admit that there have been times when I have been walking around the center of town, especially around the square, when I haven't felt safe.

We can all give out about the town but can anything be done? Having a garda presence is one thing but there could be ten times more gardas about the town but they cant just arrest people without any reason. I have it on good authority that some of the people who have been beaten up recently didn't press charges. The cops do their best but if people dont press charges they can do nothing!!

I'm not sure what the story with CCTV cameras around the town are. Am I right in saying that there are some around the square? I think the situation has gotten to a point where there should be cameras on every major street if they are not already there. Individuals have to take some responsibility on themselves by avoiding walking through trouble areas late at night, try and avoid the troublesome bars and give the scum as wide a berth as possible.

NCW was a great town and I'm proud to come from there but it is suffering from the same problems of unsocial behaviour and scumbags that a lot of similiarly sized towns around the country are and it will take a lot of imaginative thinking and brave decisions to be made to bring the place back to its former glory.

From an outsiders point of view Ive never seen so many rough girls in my life as i did in ncw (cheap orangeyblonde hair, facial piercings, tatty clothes & massive earrings) there was a girl kicked out of the bridge new years eve, she was some mess & was screaming at the bouncers to go inside and find her shoes! Next thing I heard she randomly ran across the road and started punching a girl for no reason. Nice!!

Charming girl, I've never even seen something like that in the city, but however bad NCW is Tipp Town is a 100 times worse.

I've seen plenty of stuff like that in the city. So much that I moved to NCW to get away from it! I moved here just after this thread start and it made me a bit wary of the move. Obviously I moved anyway and I am delighted I did. I haven't seen any trouble since I moved here. Love living in the area only wish I did it sooner.

All that said I do not go out drinking in NCW and that is probably why I have experienced any violence. The problem is clearly drink and it is a problem in most small county towns. Tipperary is particularly bad I hear.

Without sounding like an old man but the problem is people drinking too much, combined with a lack of manners or respect. I feel the whole country is getting more aggresive generally and this combined alcohol equals trouble. Increased police presence (and action) would help but that is not fixing the problem.

Anyway, back to the topic; I for one am loving living in NCW. But I am amazed at the number of cars with British license plates. Don't recall seeing as many in the city.

The English plates would be travellers home from England for the Christmas/New Year holiday. The younger travellers are also the cause of alot of the voilence in my opinion

Anyone who has had experience of that town could point out the problem in a heartbeat. The place is full of cousins;), and most right minded people don't want go out in a place like that when they can go elsewhere. Look at Rathkeale for gods sake, the place is like a ghost town and we all know why.

Rathkeale may be full of travellers but they are totally different breed to the ones living in Newcastle. Rathkeale travellers are just that - travellers - they come and go as they please and generally don't cause trouble, there's never any hassle between them and the settled community, save the traffic jams around Christams time! Rathkeale has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, i've never seen any fights there. Compare that to the settled travellers in Newcastle, a far more troublesome and scummy crowd......they are the ones that are killing the town.

.You must have been very pissed not to see a fight or else you must go home very early. For years there usually one fight every weekend for the last 15 years i been going out there.
I haven't gone out in NCW in the last three years because it been steadily going downhill for the last 15 years, same people , same trouble makers, starting fights with anybody they see. I have seen a hell of a lot less trouble in Limerick city (one fight in limerick for the last 15 years) than NCW (most weekends fighting). In Newcastle West, I have seen guys and Girls pick fights for no reason. One Girl fight i witness was was pissed off because another girl had a similar shoe lace top and tiny tea cloth bearly covering half her ass. she tried to rip both bits off. She was sucessfull on the top. I would not call it a top more of a 1cm across shoe lace bearly covering the nipples. They were like cats fighting, with screaming and finger nails digging into each other and pulling hair. The troubler maker burst her own "large ass" covering cloth that was bearly holding her ass in. It January on a frosty night. I was shivering in the cold and I had a coat and a jumper on. These women were just nuts in wearing basicly nothing and it was -4C and a chilling wind that night.
While some had legimate resons but most of these people Just pick a target and had a go at it just to show off, like two dogs trying to gain terroritry.
They only other place I have seen as much trouble as NCW was Eyre Square outside Supermacs in Galway 10 years back.

It not just Travellers, they are hell of a lot quieter than the locals and blow-in from surrounding areas. Over the years, I have seen and hear about lots of people (both Men & Women from all walks of life -even rich sons) fighting in the Square, Bridge and Motel after the pubs and Motel is cleared out by the Gardai's, specially that guard called "skippy" when he was on duty. Causing everybody hanging around at the same time waiting for lift home. Over the years, That when trouble starts. Shutting down the chippers early help but was only a short term solution.

My Family is still going out in NCW and they are saying it getting worst especially those on drugs. I regulary hear about it on Sundays when I am around. Now it is foreigners getting hit and vica versa.

One Garda told me that it is better for them (Both Trouble makers) to go at each other in oder to tired themselves, it is easier to arrest them afterwards and they can pile up the charges against them. Only on certain situtions they intervene.

It is up to the innocent passerby (Who I feel sorry for) and who also get no back up. Again it up to the indivudials to press charges for Assult and for others (witness) to support them in doing so, instead of the others cowarding away and complaining from a distance that nothing is getting done about it. I and many other have yet to be ask to court to tesify. I have no problem in doing so.
