First of all, this is my first time on Boards, so hello to all!
Was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem. I'm hoping to do the photography course at DIT next year, but am having a bit of trouble putting together my portfolio. I have plenty of photographs to use, but am not sure what exactly they will be looking for.
can anyone tell me what is expected for a college portfolio; format, themes etc...?
Also, are there any short portfolio courses available? I'm working, so time is an issue with most of the ones I've seen. Does anyone know of any students etc.. who might give some private help to me?
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated, as I'm about a week away from losing my mind!

I'd assume you if it's straight photography, you should be able to name drop a few photographers, maybe someone that was influential in the photography movement. explain why you like them or maybe you don't like. mmm explain what aspects of photography you like. is there a certain genre you'd see yourself breaking into after college etc.

As for your photo's it's hard to say. what they'll be looking for.

Well one thing is there's no interview, your work does the talking, and they ask you to display composition, subject matter and an understanding of photographic technic. So why don't ya pic a theme or story and just run that for 25 images, cause i submitted pretty pictures of plants and buildings, didn't get me much points at all, 320 in fact :(
I'd say do more portraits and put them in there, cause let's face it, there's not much going on with a macro of a daffodil.

I haven't updated mine in a while, but it's found me a fair bit of work. I haven't really gone for print, but so far as what it's composed of, shorter and more varied is better. I've seen portfolio that comprised 100+ photos from one event, or in one case (not sure if it was here or Photography Ireland) it was just 40 photos of someone in a field in slightly different poses.

I'm going to say that mine is perfect, but it seems about the same as what a lot of professionals churn out.

They go mad for themes and "arty" stuff. Also, it's good to have a good mix of film and digital, as in first year it's all black and white film photography!

I'm a first year in the course, by the way. :)
