Man Bites Dog

Suprisingly found the full uncut version of this at my local libary. Having it being recommended to me before online, I decided to take it home and give it a look in. Now, I like my ''black comedy' as much as the next guy, but this movie was dark!

The 'mockumentary' style combined with the low budget really gave the movie a gritty feel to say the least. I found it difficult to watch at some points. (
Namely the scene is which the kid is suffocated to death, whilst the lead character or 'film crew' don't seem to be phased in the slightest. Child death is something even a seasoned viewer like myself is not used to, especially when portrayed in such a manner
) Even though the on-screen violence isn't really OTT, Man Bites Dog definitely now ranks as one of the most disturbing movies I've ever scene. Sure I found some parts to be 'funny', but at times it was just a little 'too real' for my liking. But in saying that, I guess that is what the filmmakers were aiming. The careful constant interaction with the 'film crew' and the on-screen characters throughout the movie reminds us the audience that this is still a 'documentary'. And the handheld camera work made it feel almost like you were watching a home movie. Sure you have your Hollywood and your Blair Witch... but trust me, this is in a whole different league!

I guess it's one of those movies you will either love or hate. Although initially I was unsure to wheter I liked it or, the movie has grown on me.. in a strange sort of way. Its a bold, violent and compelling 'no holds barred' look into the life of a disturbingly ordinary 'nice guy'... who just so happens to be a cold blooded serial killer. Makes you think too, even if you don't necassarily want to.

So, anybody else seen this... opinions?

Love this film. Some of the darkest humour known to man. Superb performances all round. Much better than Henry in my view.

Yeah performances, from Benoit's own family notably, we surprisingly good. Amazing what a couple of Belgian amateur filmmakers can accomplish

I saw this movie years and years ago and I thought it was great even though it was highly disturbing (the rape scene for example). I love how the film progresses.

Very good film I have only watched it twice though. 1st time I seen it it was by accident in a way as I was given a wrong movie by someone and I watched it anyway and loved it.
