I'm having a bit of trouble with my Telecaster at the moment. On the high E and B string when I bend the string any higher than the 9th or 10th fret the note just goes dead. It will bend a tiny bit and still produce the note but after that just deadens. Very annoying. Anyone any idea why this might be and how I can fix this?

    Simplest answer:
The string(s) is choking because it's too low to the fingerboard. So.... raise it until it stops choking. Can be adjusted at the bridge.

If it's happening from the 9th fret up, theres a small chance the bow (bend) of the neck isnt enough, although usually it'd be a little further up the neck where this problem would start to show itself. It's easy to check and adjust, but if you don't know how to adjust action, i'll leave that for another day. Report back how you get on with the first suggestion.

Measure distance between strings and the very last fret and after that adjust height of bridge. It looks it is too low at E and B side. I think, but don't know.

cheers lads, i adjusted the bridge and seems to have sorted the problem. How do I check there is not excessive bending in the neck like you were talking about? Also is there a way of making sure the intonation is ok?

If adjusting the bridge has 'fixed' your problem, i wouldnt worry about the neck bow too much. If you just want to satisfy your curiosity....

    To check the neck bow:
Hold down the low E string at the first and last fret. The string will take a straight line, but because the neck has a slight bend in the middle, there will be a gap between the fingerboard and string. ie you'll see the fingerboard 'dip' away from the string all along the neck.

Just sight where the gap is biggest, and guesstimate the size. It shouldnt be any bigger than half a mm anyway (use a 1mm pick for visual reference if you need). Just report back what you see, and someone who plays telecasters should have an opinion if your neck is approximately 'normal'.

Dont go messing with it yet anyway, just check it and report back.
