    Hi,

    I've been offered a job however they are looking for two references. On the contract it states that they won't contact the person without my consent. What is the steps regarding giving my current employer as a reference?

    Hand in notice
    Ask for reference.
    Tell new job that they can be contacted?

    I'm just a bit worried about quiting when I potentially mightn't get the new job. I can't imagine my current company giving me a bad reference but still.

    Also they are looking for a personal reference. Can this be a work colleague or a different manager in the same job? Or someone with no connection to the current job?

    Don't hand in your notice until you get a written offer from the new job. I was in a similar position only a few weeks ago. I approached my boss, explained the situation and he gave me a reference without problems. I was then offered the new job and sent a written contract.

    If they didn't specify, it is up to you.

    Hi thanks. They have sent a written contract for me to sign and return. I just need to give details of references with it. I'm probably fine just being paranoid. :o

    Oh, and ensure you ask them nicely. Although they can't say anything bad about you, they can say they wouldn't hire you again.

    My point: ensure you get a good reference, which won't go sour when you leave the job.
