Met one of their reps as I've always had an interest in the Stock Market but know SFA about it tbh...seems like a decent enough system to learn without risk first...

I suppose I'm just wondering if anyone here has made a mint or lost their shirt through these guys??

Yeah I saw the askaboutmoney thread but there was really only one guy moaning, and there is always a begrudger. Also the rep fella told me that the cost of their software and training could be written off in total against capital gains tax. TBH I was only thinking about buying into this because I havent a baldy about buy and selling based on analysis.

Well they alledge to get you good rates with stockbrokers, and I believe that they are supposed to send you out tips on stocks that they think are going to do well, but that isnt why I would be thinking about signing up.

A much bigger part (imho) of what they offer is the training software, analytical tools and the ability to trade risk free with monopoly money for a few months before getting stuck in with real cash...

Anyway, dunno, I was just hoping someone on boards would have used these guys in the past so I could take advantage of their experience with the company before buying (or not as the advice might be) ;)

there are a 101 sites that allow you to trade monopoly money, yahoo, bullbearings and investopedia. There are also any number of free analytical tools on similar sites

What are they offering, and how much does it cost, the website is very light on info and costs.A definite black mark against them in my book.

Thanks for that link Daveirl, it looks like a good site. Once I have a better understanding of things I'll investigate the charges more thoroughly.

Anyway I decided last week to buy the learnaboutshares.com package. Because its a training package I can apparently deduct 100% of the cost of it from any CGT bill I will have in the future.

I paid my first installment (€300) and was sent a box with a couple of disks inside. The first had the share charting/tracking software on it and the other one had the CBT on it. Neither of the disks worked on my brand new laptop!! I emailed them and to be fair I had all the software etc by the end of that day through online transfer.

I couldnt find any info anywher on line about these guys really except one thread on askaboutmoney.com by a guy who, tbh sounded like a muppet, so I'll post up here if I have any particularly bad/good experiences with these guys.

So far my impression is that they are very helpful any time I've phoned up looking for either tech support (share tracking software bug) or with questions about tips etc.

I've received a good few emails with Tips, although if there is a pattern to when these get sent I cant see it.

As part of the package you get an e-book that is very easy to read and I'm sure that by the time I've working my way through it I'll have an excellent foundational knowledge of trading. That said, if you tend to get tired/lazy by the time the evenings roll around, like me, this is going to take you longer than learning through a classroom situation would.

In addition to the book you can call them to discuss anything you dont understand as you work through it which is useful if you need it.

FYI, I can buy or sell shares on the Irish or British stock markets through the stock broker they've put me in touch with. I havent used him yet though so I cant say good/helpful/expensive he is. I'll update on that side of things when I get there ;)

Hi there met up with these guys today, while I was impressed with the talk, it all seems to good to be true. Just wondering how you are progressing??

Hi there met up with these guys today, while I was impressed with the talk, it all seems to good to be true. Just wondering how you are progressing??

Due to a long commute to work and the fact that I am recently engaged I made the decision to do the course fully before even going near the monopoly money shares tracker. There are a number of reasons for this choice but mostly its the time thing. When I was trying to do both just after signing up I found I wasnt really doing either enough.

So I chose to concentrate on one, complete it and then hit the other.

One thing I will say about the "too good to be true" comment is that I dont believe that to be the case. If you are looking for a get-rich-quick scheme then you arent going to be happy with these guys.

But if on the other hand you are looking for a way to get into the stock market, where its very possible to continually make decent returns through technical analysis, then I think what they offer is pretty good value for money.

What motivated me to learn about the stock market and how to trade, was the fact that Pensions basically blow in terms of the returns you are likely to make. I have one but I'm certainly not going to be relying on it for my primary income once I'm retired.

For that I'm hoping for a mix of a decent income from stocks and shares and also property.

Of coures I have to pay for my wedding first! ;)

Anyway that's just my pov. Obviously you need to make your own mind up. There's a lot to learn but even in the volatile markets that have been seen recently I reckon there's plenty of money to be made if you know what you're doing.

I recently purchased the Learn About Shares system and was promised I would be making 25% a year by just following there system.

I got no help from them at all, I got plenty of phonecalls asking me to buy it then when I bought it I had to ring them!!! no one would talk to me and I kept having to PJ their technical guy. Seems like a nice chap but he couldnt help me! I tried ringing the guy that sold it to me but he has left!!! No surprise that when the stock market fall people like this start to fall too.

My advice to anyone wanting to deal with learn about shares is to stay a million miles away from them.
2000 euro for a package that no one helps you with!! Dont believe there fancy talk andc there promises!!!

avoid this system like a plague.

that's a completely unrealistic promise, unrealistic to make and to fall for

my experience is that internaxx are on the expensive side but then they offer a lot of exchanges not available with other brokers. with internaxx you can buy stocks from all over the world but you can't trade direct market access with them - the other thing is that they are owned by fortis which as a bank had problems and the government had to back it up. i prefer saxobank but i don't think they offer all irish shares (actually limit you quite a bit on which stocks to trade) but they do offer dma

alternatively you can try spread betting - you can learn a lot just by following this link:

    Hi,

It was unfair to promise my father this and I felt they let him down by saying that, he doesnt have a lot of money annd was trying to do it for us for when we need it!!!
Has there been other people upset with their service?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 Newbie_2009

I been to a presentation these guys have done. A thorough load of saleman's rubbish. They talk about 30 day moving averages like they have just solved Fermats Last Theorem. Then they pick a few ''random'' company shares and apply a the 30 moving average and hey presto you are the next Warren Buffet! They even have the arrogance to tell you that concept of a 30 day moving average is very difficult to grasp!

Its very expensive as well. I believe it is or the order of a grand or two to do the course.

P.S. Do not give them your real phone number if you go to there presentaion as they pester the hell out of you afterwards.

How are things going with the sofware now, is it worth the money if you put the time in to understand and educate yourself??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 Never buy this!

Sorry I am only getting back to you now, my father hasnt been well.

Its worse now than when we bought the system, still no refund given, even after threatening solicitors letters, their advice is amateurish, their staff know nothing and their Managing Director took my first call and then took no more. I withheld my number and when I rang recently and he answered he hung up when he heard it was me.....

    Stay away from these comwboys.

If they have 3000 happy customers as they say revenue generated is in the region of €5.5m nice money. Has anyone any positive feedback from this company??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34 the fella who

I bought the product, and i keep asking myself why??? One advantage is the tips which come fortnightly but I could of got these if I had went to the Redmayne and Bentley stockbrokers site and paid the subscription for the tips. £50 i think is the cost. The software basically allows you to track your shares. Essentialy its pretty much a waste of money im afraid, but it does give you an introduction to the stock market. Just go to redmayne and bentley or any other stock broker and spend the 2 grand on holiday or something!!

If you want to learn about the stock market there a really cheap informative thing called the internet that gives a wealth of information regarding investing in shares and best of all it is free. As someone who works within the industry I have heard a lot of negative things about this company... you have been warned.

After reading all this im 90/10 against going near these guys does anyone actually have anything good to say bout them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭iknorr

hi all, i just came back from one of their seminars tonight.

It seemed ok at the time but looking back at what actually happened, it wasnt that informative. it just showed how to make money using the moving average. Never really got into the day to day running of the software. Support for software. Updates. etc
Im going back tmro for a one on one. Also its 1945 for the software until friday. then it will be 2500. Hmm i wonder what will happen if i go to their seminar on the 19th?

Hi guys I am offering a stock trading course it will turn you into a stock trading guru in 2 months with only 1 hour learning per week . Sounds too good to be true doesnt it ... I only charge €800 for the course.. If you have been burned in the stock market this course is for you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it sounds too good to be true it is, there are alot of scammers around when it comes to the stock market

Here is a free course I took a while back and it helped me.. It is free and there are many other free resources on the net if you just look

    http://www.informedtrades.com/trades.php?page=freetradingcourses

for the MOD could you make a sticky and put in FREE resources for budding investors, traders .... Instead of them being easily parted with their money
I am sure there are lots of people here to contribute learning sites ;)

Bullish, whats your take on the software that learn about shares are offering? Do you offer anything like this. Is there something special with this software?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭Bullish

Sorry guys I dont offer any course..... I was kidding
There is no need to pay for most of the information on trading.. It is available on the net, The link I put up is just a website that has a lot of videos on different aspects of trading,,GLTA

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44 ED 209

You will find most of the information online. Buy a few books. Learn about the fundamentals. In this day an age you should only pay for really high end information.

My advise would be go to www.informedtrades.com they have a free course in video format..just click university on the left .. you dont sign up or anything just look at the videos,
It is basic but if you have never traded before this is a good starting point ;)

There is a huge amount of free info on the web, It just takes the time to look for it

    Folks,

Please be advised that we have received a solicitor's letter from Learnaboutshares.com regarding posts that they consider to be "malicious" and "defamatory" and requesting the posters be banned.

I have removed the comments but will not be banning members. However I do advise caution in how you post about them, or indeed any company on Boards.ie and remember the laws of libel apply just as much online as they do in print.

    Thank you

    Darragh

I would urge caution for anyone thinking of buying this type of product, I know someone selling this type of package and they have zero expierence of shares mostly the sales people are sales men or women who have sold insurance etc do your research ppl

    Hey all,
I have had some experience with Learn About Shares.
Im open to correction here but this is what i understand

Learn about shares offers an education package.
This package includes but is not limited to,

An "account manager" who works for learn about shares who is there for "bouncing ideas off".
An online book or reading material for self training, which apparently is all u need to sit the Financial advisor test.
A piece of online software that you must manually enter your share information into. This will track your shares and notify you of increase/decreases in prices set at a pre-determined value. (3% loss/10% gain is common).
You must set up ur own account with the UK broker. You will buy an sell shares with this broker over the phone. ( not online) The broker will also offer you advice on the shares.
The broker is linked somehow to Learn about shares customers, and is familiar with their system.

A new customer has a 10 day cooling off period. A refund will be issued upon the request of the customer to do so, within that 10 day period.

The refund is normally by check and can take up to 3 weeks to process, but they have recently issued a refund by Credit Card.

The product is aimed at people who are just starting to deal shares.

They say at their seminars that they make their money from Commission off the broker and that the 1950 set up fee just about covers the initial set up.

I would like if one of the directors or sales people from Learn About Shares would come on this forum and speak to people about their service and products. Alot of what is on here is here say. By speaking with the people on boards.ie you can clarify matters.
Sending Solicitor letters will not stop people talking on forums about Learn About Shares. People may feel threatened by this and wonder why Learn About Shares would not like people discussing there services.

So why not come on here and discus with possibly future customers, what Learn About Shares really offers?

To be honest if you are looking for good rates you will have to look outside of the irish brokers.
I have heard nothing but bad things about learn about Shares. Seem to overrate their service.

I agree with Mooney there, learn about shares seems to be a bad company to go for try the uk check forums and get with best low cost company as possible.

One of the main things i wanted was the ability to buy shares online with Learn About Shares....when i asked the sales guy, he said yes, of course, but just ring the broker before hand to get some advice.

So i joined up and realized i cant do this. in fairness I did get a refund, eventually.

What are your expectations from investing? Do you want to buy companies with good prospects with a long-term horizon or do you want to try and learn about short-term trading using technical analysis (a completely unproven area). The service that this company offer is based on later. This is just my opinion, but I think that ordinary retail investors just starting out should always learn about fundamental analysis before even considering alternative methods. Having said that, 95% of people on this site either use technical analysis or just use the "lucky-dip" approach.

A friend of mine bought their package out of ignorance coupled with the pressure from the salesman! he was told he would be tought how to trade the stockmarket and all they tought him was how to use their software which i have to say is possibly the worst iv ever seen and also when he got the demo from the salesman he was shown different software to that which they provide! and when he started trading only after 4 weeks they sent him spreadbetting!!
They claim trading is simple and you cant go wrong using a movingaverage and stoploss! well fact is it can and it does go wrong Often!! trading takes a lot of time to get to grips with using technical indicator's such as MACD, RSI, FFibonacci ratios,On-balance volume, Chart pattern, Trending (trend channels) its also very important to know the business cycle of the company your investing in and whats happening in that business sector!
you can learn how to trade the market online for FREE!! there are many good sites that will give you all the information you need and for Free and set up a simulated account with almost any stockbroker again for Free!!
take your time learning on the similator as it can take 6/12 months to understand market timing and analysis. you can shop around the brokers for their fees on tips typically £50 for the year, these will help you with your stock picks.

I'm new into share, I'm just about to open an account with WWW.firstrade.com

its handy to those who know nothing or less about shares.

Excellent post, Irishtrader. I would advise anyone thinking of signing up with outfits like Learnaboutshares to research very carefully the background of same.It is very easy to get carried away, but now is not the time to be throwing your money away.

Hi everyone - new to this so please be patient. I got a call from a company offering to teach me how to trade the stock market. I have just recently been made redundant in this wonderful country of our he he and tbh i am interested in learning more. can anybody steer me in the right direction?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 brennjt

learn about shares are possibly the biggest load of rubbish i ever invested in. i paid them €1800 and all they did was gave me software which was very poor. They gave me no further support. I would not advice anyone to have any dealings with them. I feel robbed. When I tried to get my money back I was told not a hope. You will not learn how to trade the stock market with them. Most of what they have is free on the RTE website under the busisness section for free. Do not get taken in by their salemen.
