    Hey,

I hope this has not been covered before. I am getting a console for x mas and I am just wondering what do I need and how much am I looking at? I am getting the 40gb deal with one game, one dvd and an extra controller. Do I then need to get a sony remote and a good hdmi cable? Bare in mind I will be getting a hd tv in feb. Any other tips to get me up and running as smoothly as possible would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Try and get a hdtv that supports 1080P, 37" is the smallest you can get at the mo that supports 1080P.

If you are going to be using a HDTV then a HDMI cable is a must. Get the remote if you think you will be watching movies on it.

There's not really any such thing as a 'good' HDMI cable. Digital cables either work or they don't, so don't be tricked into paying for a more expensive one - any HDMI cable will do the job perfectly.

The remote is a little unnecessary in my opinion. It doesn't do anything the joypad doesn't do, you just need to get used to using the pad for movies and you'll be fine.

So long as the cable itself is strong and the connections sturdy, cheap is fine. It's a digital signal, so gold connections etc. are worth nothing to you unless you intend to connect and disconnect your PS3 a whole lot.

If ur goin for a 1080p tv then u mite as well have 100hz while ur at it. A friend of mine has a 32" bravia wit 100hz. I tried fifa 08 on his ps3 and i cudnt believe the difference over my 19" samsung. I looked it up earlier and dat tv is about 900 on pixmania.ie

There's no point in spending extra to get a 1080p TV if you're settling for 37 inches. The difference in resolution is virtually unnoticeable at that size. Indeed, many people say that until the diagonal approaches 100 inches, you'll offer almost no difference sitting across the room between 720 and 1080. And as many games are only 720p, it won't reward you as much as getting a larger 720p televison.

€900 for a 32" is a bit much isn't it? I got my 40" Bravia for €900, I think you can get them for less than a grand in Powercity too.

    Have a look here

Plenty of 2 meter cables for less than €10 - unless you need a 9 foot one ;)

ditto. don't even think about 1080p until you plan on buying over 50" there's just no point to it at all, it's all hype to make you spend more. 720p is fine for anything under 50".

don't waste your time with the ps3 remote, i got mine with it on lunch day and have used it twice (just to see) and other than that i always use the controller, it's wireless too and the buttons are on-screen when playing movies so there's no need for the dvd remote, it's just a waste of money.

as for HDMI anything thats certified as a HDMI cable will more than suffice. as has been said already anything more is just to get you to part with more cash.

Different strokes for different folks. I use the remote four or five times a week.

If your getting a 40" + lcd then get a 1080p lcd if you can afford it. Twice the resolution of 1080i for bluray.

on paper yes, but you won't even notice the difference between 720 and 1080 on a 40" screen so it's pointless. go to your local xtra-vision or sony shop and get them (assuming there's a geek in there that has a PS3 set up) to demonstrate it for you. i'm sure they'll big up the more expensive option to make a sale, but open your eyes and look at it. you might be able to see a difference from 2 feet away, but at the distances you'll be watching tv from there's just no point in a 1080p TV (even with a PS3) unless you plan on going over 50" with it. i know the guy in my local xtra-vision and he went through the whole range of their TV's and showed me up close what the differences in resolution look like on both a 40" and 50" bravia and 1080p really is only worth it if you're going to pay for a 50".

seriously, i got my PS3 on launch day and only had a 28" CRT at the time and i did a lot of research over the months that followed into what TV I was going to get to show it off the most. I was going to wait for the new top end Bravia (which looks pretty damn sweet) but after seeing how little there was between 720 & 1080 on a 40" screen I decided that almost 3k just wasn't worth it for what I would be getting.

so I kept looking and eventually got the 40" tevion (1080i) that was just in aldi in october for 850e and I'm so happy I didn't spend any more. my g/f's brother bought the top end 40" samsung 3 months before and paid a small fortune (over 1500e, but he won't tell me exactly how much) for it and even he admits that the one i have has just as good a picture as his. we've been back and fourth with both tellys in different resolutions and unless you are right in front of them, there's very little to see between a 720 & 1080 output.
