Setting up ps3 online

I've separated my PS3 and my pc - they just weren't getting along since the pc became jealous of my devotion to the ps3:p:p:p

Anyways, the modem/router went with the pc to another room 40 ft away. I was in pc world today to buy a similar modem/router and was told that this would not work as I can't have 2 modem/routers working off the same phoneline. I ended up getting a belkin wireless modem router which I was assured would easily have the range to broadcast that distance. I'm very dubious and to be honest, I'm on the point of returning it as I've heard nothing but bad reports about these wireless routers dropping signals mid game which would annoy the hell out of me. Has anyone else got a similar set up to me, i.e. pc with modem/router in one room and ps 3 in another room 40feet away and if so, how do you get the ps3 online?

These techie questions are way above me - all I know is how to turn it on and shoot people (online of course;))

My parents have some kinda set up with routers in two rooms, one connected to the other. It's all Eircom/Zyxel whatever stuff. Really not sure how it's set up but it can certainly be done. They have wireless coverage across their whole house, and it's a big 5 bed bungalow.

The couple of times I've used Belkin wireless stuff I found it a complete nightmare. Girlfriend had a wireless dongle for her old laptop. Random signal loss on our home network and it refused under any circumstances to work on the network in her parents house. Maybe their routers are okay but I certainly won't be spending money on them any time soon.

I probably have something like this, and using Belkin hardware too :o

But I wouldn't recommend them, 1 of the Routers I have Is hopeless as an actual router. It keeps dropping packets so it's only good as an access point.

My Setup is DSL router connected to phoneline with an attached Belkin Wireless Router. Then I have another Belkin Access point about 30 feet away that acts as a bridge back to the main Router. My Laptop connects to this AP then, or PS3 in your case.

    so it's something like
    DSL+Wifi <
    30ft
    >Access Point<
    >PS3/Laptop+Wifi

I have to say it was a pretty tricky setup to get going though. I had to use all Belkin H/W because supposedly it's recommended for comm puposes. The h/w also needs to support WDS to provide the bridge from 1 AP to another.

What you could try is getting a wifi range extender which will point the wifi signal in a particular direction to boost it and provide a better range but I haven't tried these.

    Belkin = complete trash.
COuldn't get MSN messenger working without messing with MTU sizes and VPN didn't work at all. Return in tomorrow.
    Get a Linksys or Netgear.

why dont u connect the wireless router near ure ps3 and wire it to the ps3.then get a wireless usb stick or card for ure pc to access internet.then it wouldnt be as bad dropping wireless connection as it would be accessing internet.

I've decided to bring back the Belkin router and but some Netgear homeplugs. These gadgets are supposed to route the dsl signal via the house wiring to another plug where I keep the ps3. Supposed to be better than wireless with no loss of signal.

Amazing the difference in peoples experiences. I wouldn't use Linksys as a doorstop, never mind a router. had one and returned it in tow days. had a Belkin for 4 years, it failed last year, and they sent me a new one under their lifetime warranty. Sweet.
