Depends how long you are there for. Oyster card's can save you a lot over paying cash.

The Oyster card is really useful if you make a lot of trips in one day. There is a certain monetary limit that caps your spending. Once you reach this, all subsequent trips are free. Plus it beats having to buy tickets the whole time.

You can buy an oyster card at any underground station. There are probably other ways as well.

It all depends on how long you will be there, where you will be going and what modes you use.

If Bus/Tube/DLR/Tram are all you will be using then a pay and go oyster card is the best and cheapest for short term use.

It costs £2 (which is refundable) and then you can put any amount you like on it. It is the cheapest way of paying for single fares on all modes and if you travel alot in one day it is capped at £0.50 less than the cheapest one day pas for the modes you use.

For longer use you can get 7 day or longer travelcards and season tickets on oyster.

If you need to use Rail services as well then you cannot use P+G oyster as it is not valid on most rail services at the moment. In this case a one, three or 7 day paper travelcard is the best value if you will need to use rail and will be travelling a lot.

Apart from a handful of coach services to/from the airports all the bus services in Greater London are operated as part of the TfL bus network and all have a single fare no matter the length of the journey. The single fare is £0.90 with oyster or £2 cash. If you only use busses the daily cap with oyster is £3.

If you need to travel from outside Greater London then it is more complicated and would all depend on your specific travel arrangements.

All the info is available on the TfL website: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/
