    Hi there,
    just bought a Packard Bell, think it's this one here http://www.packardbell.co.uk/products/desktops/ixtreme/ixtreme-2711/productsheet-PB81X06201-900.html (I'm at work, so not 100% sure, but it's defo one of the three ixtreme models) It's running Vista Home premium.
    The sound is as follows:
    Sound
    Chipset Realtek ALC 888
    Type Integrated
    Speakers No

    There are two jacks in the front of the PC (green and pink) and four in the back (green, pink, blue and black)

    The monitor I bought has speakers. It came with a cable (blue to plug into back of PC and green to plug into monitor). I did that and nothing happened. Then I switched it round and plugged the blue one into the monitor and the green one into the back green jack and hurrah, sound came out of the monitor. So far so good. Then i plugged in my headset in the front (green and pink) and the headphones worked. Then I wanted to use skype but my mice didn't work, so I changed some settings in the Realtek manager and got the headset to work in skype (changed something to digital output), which it does now, but now I have no more sound out of the monitor or the headphones from the PC (internet). the only thing that works is skype. There are so many settings and so many jacks, I don't know what to set to what. Does anyone have any advice, or do i need to post more info?
    Many thanks for your help

    I thought that Vista was and advanced system, why would I want to go back to XP? And what's wrong with the sound chip I have, why do I need a new soundcard.

    Vista is the worse OS MS did since Millenium Edition. It is bloated and cut back all the good bits out it was supposed to have, yet still shipped before finished.

    Many, many Windows programs and devices do not work properly on Vista. Many parts of Vista work poorly compared with Windows 2000 or XP. It also needs 2x CPU and 2x RAM to achieve the same performance as XP.

    It's a very very cheap sound chip.

    Vista has fake nagging security and no extra advanced features that anyone needs to get work done, browse web or play games. DX10 is con job to sell Vista and new graphics cards. DX10 may be on next XP SP . NT4 got the newer Win98 DX versions as SP upgrades.
    Win2K = NT5.0
    XP = NT5.1
    Server 2003 = NT5.2
    Vista = NT 6.0

    The first version of NT was 3.1 (in 1993), for reasons that would confuse you and you would not believe :) This was real 32 bits when "ordinary" Windows For Workgroups was 16bit running on DOS (as was most of Win95 & Win98)

    They're grand for normal people. Dunno how good the Vista drivers are, but I have no problems with my ALC882 in XP.

    cltt97: Try getting the latest drivers for it at http://www.realtek.com.tw/ ("High Definition Audio Codec" = your thing). There were new ones released a couple of days ago. The "Audio Manager" thing for it is a bit confusing in that you can reconfigure any of the sockets to be anything.

    Generally the basic sockets are:
    Green - line out (i.e. speakers, headphones, etc.)
    Blue - line in
    Pink - mic

    Hi guys,

    Thanks very much for all your helpl. I finally managed to sort out the sound. I restored all settings and started again at zero and eventually got it all working, but as you say it takes a while to figure out that manager and then the device settings and wherever else you can change settings for the sound.
    All I want my PC for is to store and edit my 50 million pictures, maybe one day I might start playing with editing videos or something, and I'll probably start storing songs, but I won't play games, we have an X-Box 360 for that. Other than that I might run stats programs, but surely this fancy machine should be able to cope with all of that no matterhow bad Vista appears to be?

    It can 10x slower deleting image files or copying them on a Network than XP. Something to do with added DRM? Not sure.

    maybe the Vista SP1 (Early next year) may improve it.
