    Alright!

I have been given the assignment to buy my brothers PS3 for Christmas. He wants the 60gb version. I'm working in Dublin so I want to get one around here. Was just in Game on Kildare St. and was told that they have none but they have a couple of hundren 40gb.

Does anyone know where to get the 60GB version in Dublin? And also what packages are available. I would be looking for a package with a second joypad more that a package with games.

    Thanks in advance
    Nedd

You will have to look further afield than Dublin City. I found some in HMV in Pavillion SC in Swords last week but I'm sure they're gone now.
None in Liffey Valley, Blanchardstown, Dundrun SC.

    thanks.

just talking to my brother and with the only main difference being the PS2 playback i think he's going to get the 40gb one.

on a completely unrelated subject. has anyone installed Linux on a PS3 and used it for divX playback? can you transfer files to and from the PS3 using WIFI?

I believe it possible to achieve divx playback this way but it is suppose to be quite the chore. Anyways, the PS3 is getting divx playback soon so you'll be sorted.

Don't think there's any difference between the 60gb and 40gb in that respect. All of the european retail versions do software emulation rather than hardware. Only the US (and I think Japanese) versions had actual PS2 hardware in them, and I think that's now been axed too.

The 60GB does software emulation, while the 40GB does no emulation at all.

    So there's a big difference.

And don't worry about it 'only' being software emulation - it works really well with a large majority of games so the 60GB is well worth getting if you can.

Right you are... I'd forgotten that little bombshell. Speculating a bit here but surely that could be rectified, if it's just software? Hard to understand why it was dropped.

A certain chip was removed from the 40gb known as the GS chip which is what was required for PS2 software emulation. Originally the PS3 had 2 chips for full hardware PS3 emulation, the Emotion Engine Chip (EE) and the Graphics Synthesiser Chip (GS).

Europe only got the PS3's with the GS chip in the 60gb models
    The 40gb has neither chips.

At least now I can justify being an early adopter. :D
