    So...I'm migrating my OS to a new hard drive this evening.....

    if I copy over the files, then install grub, I'm good, right?

    boot to live cd, mount both drives, cp -pr <old drive mount point> <new drive mount point>, install grub, job done.

    Just seems a bit too simple, but my brain tells me it's correct.

    Just be careful of /dev and /proc - I'm not sure how they'll handle the change.

    Hmmm.

    I'm thinking both should get created at boot time.

    I found an interesting argument for cp.... -x.....from the man page:
    -x, --one-file-system
              stay on this file system

    edit: So I'm thinking: No live cd, normal boot then: cp -rpx / <new mount point>

    edit: Hmmm, telinit 1 first methinks.
