    Folks,

I tried boards before and had some good replies so I thought I'd try again..

We (an international investment bank) are looking for a VB6/SQL developer to join a small team. Location is central Dublin. We want someone with 3+ years VB experience, idealy in a banking environment, but anything financial will suffice. Package for right person is very, very good, ie 30-55K.

Exposure to object orientated development, crystal reports a bonus.

Successful candidate should expect to be trained in VB.Net (2005) and using it within 12-18 months.

PM me in the first instance and I'll fwd on details of our HR person whom you can send a CV to.

    Many thanks.

That salary range you quoted is too wide to be useful. It sounds like you're not sure what you want. €30K is also too low for someone with 3+ years experience.

Not by the standards of some that I've interviewed lately.

The range is there to to reflect what we're seeing in the current market, people with 2-3 years experience who can't answer the most basic programming questions, how they currently have jobs is truely beyond me. Idealy we want a person with 5+ years OO investment banking ie the top end, but will consider an eager up and coming person who is willing to get the head down and produce but learn a lot at the same time, ie the bottom end of the range.

    You interested in the job?

to be honest your top range is below the bottom of my range. I've been doing VB since VB3 was new and exciting.

I agree with you on people with 2-3 years experience having no clue about basic stuff. We had one in here last week who couldnt even write a basic sql query. But the market is so tough for people hiring that even these guys expect €30K+. And they're getting it.

Just on the salary thing, in my experience when you quote a range like that you wont get anybody applying that is looking for near the top of the range. In my younger and more foolish days i did interviews where the salary range was as wide as yours. It was obvious from the interview that they had no intention of hiring at that level and they were just chancing their arm hoping to get somebody experienced who would accept a lowball offer.
If you really want somebody with 5+ years then you're better off saying that but also mention that you will take somebody with less experience if they are exceptional. You will get a better class of candidate.

Good points. The salary range is here on boards just 'cos I'm casting as wide a net as possible, the agencies are proving to be fairly useless with their scatter gun approach.

We are very much looking at the top range (to such a person viewing!).

    Thanks
