i had a similar problem before, and it was only something small - unticking a certain box in settings sorted it out. was headwrecking for a good few days tho until i got it sorted!!

when its shutting down , does it just switch off straight away like pulling the plug, or does it go trough the motions of shutting down fully....

I used to do PC repair for a semi-living and wouldn't mind having a look but unfortunately can only do that at evenings/weekends, am busy all this week and the weekend I'm playing in the Macau in Cork.

If you want to post up a detailed description of what's going wrong (e.g. "I try to turn it on, it whines, dust flies out the back, the screen lights up, some text appears, then it goes black, coughs and dies") then I could try giving some advice...from the description so far, could be a lot of different things. Oh yeah and what kind of computer (laptop, desktop, Mac, etc) what OS, etc...

If you still haven't got it fixed by next week you can PM me & I'd be happy to help out maybe Monday night or something.

Apparently it was shutting down with blue screens intermittently. Now it wont turn on at all. According to the guy in the PC repair place he went a power surge fried the PSU, 3 RAM modules and the motherboard...

I've been meaning to post and ask about this as the exact same thing is happening to me as well. It restarts itself 4 or 5 times before it will stay on and each time its just as if the power has been pulled out. It has only been since I hooked it up to NTL. Anyone any ideas?

Well problems after hooking up to the internet. Got Anti-virus, Windows Firewall enabled?

I have a spare PSU and might have some RAM (might not be the right type for you) if you need them Valor. Over in Donnybrook on Thursday for a Canal Root (ugh).

One easy step a non-techie can take to help diagnose this problem is to run a disk check from within windows. 90% of the time this problem is dodgy RAM or a dodgy hard disk. Right click on your C: drive, pick "tools", then check your drive for errors. If it finds any its a safe bet your hard disk is soon to go kaput.
