I got an idea for a short story a few days ago but am getting bogged down on how best to open it. I am just wondering if posters here considir the opening paragraphs to be of much importance. personally I think they are, as it is your attempt to get the reader interested in reading on, so would you when judging a novel / short story would you bring the opening lines into considiration?

Depends, would you consider my not reading further than the opening paragraph if it didn't grab my attention important? ;)

Yes, the opening line is everything to the story. It is your signpost to the rest, and if it's not compelling readers won't bother turning down the road but will drive on by.

Maybe we can help with it? :)

I love a nice opener, not immediately obvious but indicatively threading about the borders of the books essential themes and compositive elements, a nurturing towards the core so to speak

Thats the way I started my first work but remember as well that you don't have to produce a perfect draft your first time. Thats what revision is for. Your basic ideas and concepts could change in the process of writing, your perfect first paragraph could become irrelevant.
