My hard drive crashed at the weekend. I reformatted it, but the upshot is my iTunes library has been wiped. Over 2000 songs and video and podcasts etc..
Is there a way I can upload music into my library and only sync one album at a time? If I connect to iTunes I'll lose everything.

Sorry, think I can probably help but I'm not sure what exactly you want to do.

I hate people using the terms "upload" and "download" for iPods and stuff. Some people say "I'll upload it to my iPod" and I've heard others say "I'll download it to my iPod".

Is it that you want to copy music FROM your iPod?

Also, what was the bit about "one album at a time"? If I understood it correctly (probably didn't) then I don't see why you would want to do that.

i assume you have an ipod??

connect your ipod as an external drive. enable "show hidden and system files" in folder options [tools>folder options>view>].

looking at your ipod as a drive, you should now seea folder called ipod control. this contains all your music in folders such as F01 etc.

Copy this ipod control folder over, add it to your now blank itunes library, enable copy files to itunes library folder. also allow itunes to organise your folders. all the music on your ipod should now be back magically once its done, you can delete the original f01 etc folders.

    hope this helps!

pretty much ya, ur giving your itunes library all that's on your ipod again. i make a regular backup of this ipod control folder, as it's always handy to have if a HD crashes or whatever!

let me know if it works for ya!

Every time I connect the iPod it automatically opens iTunes and starts to sync. It asks me do I want to transfer purchased items to my iTunes library. Should I allow this, ie will it only transfer what I've purchased and not the music I've synced fro my cd's?

You can deselect all the music in your iTunes so it doesn't sync to your iPod. Would this help maybe? Don't allow iTunes to transfer the purchased items either cos as you say you'll lose your cd synced items.

You could use Ephpod for Windows to transfer music back to your computer from your iPod and then add them to your iTunes library.

Or if you know someone with a Mac you could get them to use Senuti (iTunes backwards) which will take the files you have on your iPod and automatically add them to the iTunes library. You could then copy them off the Mac and onto your computer

or you could just rename itunes.exe to something else, which will prevent it from running, perform all your copying over, then rename back to itunes.exe and work away again. also make sure you end the ituneshelper.exe process in task manager.

I'm guessing cos the OP has posted to the Mac forum that he/she is a Mac user... another Mac alternative to Ephpod or Senuti would be iPodDisk which is very straight forward and user friendly, for two way iPod transfer.

no this thread was moved from mobiles/pda forum to mac, so not necessarily a mac user.

edit: on that note, mac os forum may not be the best place for this question??

Would that work though since the ipod is formatted to windows, not mac?

you're right phantom, that won't work, if its a windows formatted ipod it's gotta be sorted on a pc running windows os.

i really don;t think this is the right forum for this q to get correct answers, mods??

@ keano_afc, u running windows or mac os?
