    Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice. My new MacBook (just over 3 months old) has gotten a crack on the LCD screen. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get repaired?

Unfortunately, you don't repair LCD's.. you get it replaced.

It won't be cheap. Probably worth buying a new MacBook to be honest.

How did it get broken ? There have been reports of MB screens cracking of their own free will believe it or not. If this is the case call Apple.

The panel itself isn't that expensive in Euros, $300 = ~200 euro here. $249 (~170 euro + postage) here - I've dealt with these guys and they're pretty quick delivering the goods.

Getting someone to do the work would cost about 120 quid for 2 hours labour which I estimate is how long the job should take if I were doing it.

Out of interest, do you know of anywhere that would do this? Or do you do them yourself?

    Thanks for the info.

I left my computer on the floor, not realising it was beside a cold vent. When I picked it up I noticed it was really cold and the screen was cracked up the left hand side - with a big black spot on it!!!

Was wondering is this a common problem with Macs - never heard of something like this happening before.....

If only 3 months old then would warranty not cover it?
Or would they say this damage was the user's fault?

Not sure..........I suppose if other Mac users have had the same experience as me, screens cracking because of the cold they might cover the cost in the warranty....I'll bring it to the Mac Shop tomorrow and see I suppose!

Jesus must have been a really cold vent, those things are certified for certain temperatures both for storage and use.

Sure nobody stepped on it or kicked it slightly while it was on the ground?

Don't dsay anything about the cold vent. Just tell them it cracked. They should be able to tell from the casing it hasn't had rough treatment and it should be repaired under warranty.

I agree, it seems likely that if it was on the floor that someone could have accidently stepped on it. Hope it gets sorted for you though.

yeah those things have to get really really cold for them to crack.....as in purposely freeze the hell out of it. From the specs on the website, it's rated to -24ºC.

someone in my house has since admitted to closing the screen on the cord of the laptop - somehow it got caught inside before he closed it!

Brought it to the shop and they said it may be covered under the warranty, if not it'll got 500 euro. Ouch!

...so bill them for it. And don't let other people use your laptop.
What did you tell the shop?

I seriously hope he's going to pay for it to be mended.
And I don't believe that's how it happened, sounds more like he stood on the macbook.

But I guess you'll never leave your expensive laptop sitting on the ground ever again, eh? ;)

    Definitely not ;)

No he is going to pay for it............and he brought it into the shop to get repaired - he insists that's what happened to it anyway...from looking at the screen his explanation sounds possible. The crack in the screen is cord shaped.

The laptop cost 1250, can't believe the screen alone costs 500 to replace!

Was it the actual socket that plugs into your laptop that did the damage? Ouch!

The screen itself is about 200 euro or so. You should shop around, although there aren't a lot of Apple certified techs in Ireland.

If you know someone who is VERY electronics savvy then maybe you could get them to replace the screen? It's not rocket science but it's very fiddly. You can see in the below link how the screen is replaced

Im pretty sure someone here or on adverts will fit the screen for you for a nominal fee. You could throw an ad up on adverts, you wouldn't want to get Oriel all upset, so don't post it here :D

Or you could tackle it yourself....

Yes, a warranty against manufacturing defects. Not insurance against carelessness, neglect or willful damage.

LCD's have always been a area of contention with warranties though. Some people have succesfully claimed against their home owners insurance for such incidents though. Might be worth looking into.

Considering it's only three months old, wouldn't it be better to get it repaired through an authorised repair centre? That way the warranty would still remain intact, if a none authorised person did the repair would that not invalidate the rest of the warranty (nine months).

Apple arent too strict on it TBH. As long as you do a tidy job and dont fcuk it up, you shoul be fine.

Yes you do, it covers defective hardware, but i've never heard of a laptop manufacturer covering a smashed screen.

Just to let you all know that I have been very very lucky and Apple have replaced the screen under warranty!

So happy to have my MAC back!

just wondering but HOW did you manag that, and with what apple store, what retailer etc?

Reason why I'm asking, is that I have a problem with my screen - loads of stuck pixels it seems.. but I think there's some damage that's causing them.. big blotches they're turning into. It startde happening not long after I got it (last April) but I've got used to it. But I do want to get it fixed before April 08 when my warranty expires (and my receipt is fading too..)

I don't know if you need the actual receipt. Your guarantee should be registered with Apple at the time of purchase. Just in case, take a photocopy or a scan of it...

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
