Wales V Ireland Was In Hd Without Sub!

I assumed some eagle eyed person would have posted this on Saturday and I was too lazy to switch on my PC to go it-sorry! The Wales v Ireland game was in HD on Saturday for ordinary skysports subscribers. It was on SS3 with the red button so when prompted I pressed it in hope and lo and behold it wasn't blocked. Maybe Sky should have a couple of Prem League matches in HD to encourage people to subscribe. My own view however, is if you never see HD you won't miss it.

How were you able to watch it without a Sky HD box?

If you had Sky Sports 3 and a Sky HD box then surely you would have had it in HD anyway? I think I am missing something.

Not true, you can have SS3 and a sky HD box, and still be unable to view it in HD. Not all sky sports events are broadcast in HD.

    Exactly.

I'm only guessing here but I think that the op probably pressed the red button on his standard Sky box and the game popped up. This would still be in SD though. Special hardware needed to receive HD broadcast.

HD without a HD box.... now that would make you a lot of money. just hit red. and green for a cup of coffee..

The way I'm reading MM's post is that if you have a HD box and SS3 that you get each game in HD anyway, which you do not.

I suppose you could have a Sky HD box and not subscribe to HD. What you said about not all sports events being in HD. Nobody said they were.

Hobart - The game on Saturday was broadcast on SS3 in SD, in the corner of the screen there was a red dot with HD written under it. This displayed on normal Sky subs as well as HD subs. (I was watching on a normal Sky Sports sub and I saw it)
I think the confusion is that the op, on seeing this red dot pressed the red button, not expecting it to work, but when he got a picture he presumed it was HD, of course it wasn't as he would need a HD decoder to view it.
Mossy is not suggesting that everything on SS is broadcast in HD, but if you have Sky HD and Sky Sports you can view everything that is broadcast in HD on Sky Sports.

Sorry folks, busy yesterday. I DO have a Sky HD box which I got recently. I don't subscribe to any of the HD Channels yet. I saw the match in HD...

Yes, there is no obligation to subscribe to HD channels if you have a Sky HD box.

I appreciate that, in-fact I watched the match in HD myself. MM said "If you had Sky Sports 3 and a Sky HD box then surely you would have had it in HD anyway" which is not true as SS3 on a HD box would give you the match in SD. The match was actually brodcast in HD on SSXtra HD not SS3.

You would have had to press red to view it in HD and, as he later pointed out, not all HD boxes have a HD sub.

Apologies Widescreen, I was of the assumption that if you had a Sky HD box and a Sky Sports Sub that you had Sky Sports HD automatically, did not know you could have HD box and normal SS sub without HD.

Actually ,when I was getting my card switched to the HD box they(Sky)did all they could to railroad me to the HD Sub. I had been told when I bought the box to just tell Sky that I did not yet have a HD Ready TV and was just getting organised by getting the digibox first!

    Hey there Widescreen,

Could you let me know where you sourced the HD box and what was the cost.

I got the box on eBay about a month ago from a location in the UK. This is the link but I dont think it gives much detail at moment. I have a phone number which I can supply if you send me a PM. Cost worked out around €310.Roughly equivalent to the recent Sky deal in Ireland but without installation cost, hassle etc.c.. so far so good with the box...

all eBay boxes have gone up from ~169 pounds, to ~225 pounds.

Apparently Sky increased the price of the box to their dealer network, hence the increase!

I paid the £169 but unfortunately had to pay £45 for freight costs but it still represented good value and avoided the Sky install charge and phone line hassle as well.
