    Pay and Allowances

During the initial 58 weeks training period, €169.46 per week, plus lodging allowance (€68.18 per week while in the Garda College, €115.00 while training in Garda Stations).

On Appointment to An Garda Síochána

Annual salary of €22,523.00 rising by increments to €40,472.00 (July 2004 rates). Rent and other allowances are also payable.

Fair enough, standard salary is €22.5k on admission, could any Garda on boards outline the rent and other allowances part of renumeration please?

Obviously, I had considered it to be a good career but the extra allowances must be considerable to bring the figures quoted above to a reasonable level.

NOTE: Higher qualifications attract extra pay. Candidates with certain 3rd level educational qualifications may qualify for additional salary increments.

Is this only for degree qualified personnel or is it graduated depending on qualifications. eg. Cert/Dip and so on?

Im not a Garda bit have some first hand knowledge of this. First off its all available online. The day your attested you go to the €22,523 figure. About 6-10 weeks later it goes up by about 2k. Rent allowance is something loike 77 quid a week. The other stuff there tlaking about is uniform allowance, sunday pay, unsocial hours pay and various other allowances. For example if you have to work outside your station for a day (ie your on a course or in court) then you get extra money for that depending on where it is in relation to your station. Its not major money but it all adds up.

In reation to the qualifactions question. Once your attested and if you have a qualifaction of some sort you can apply to jump up the pay scale a number of points. Its applicable to any 3rd level qualifaction as far as I know. You have to check if it applies to yours specfically though.

You get paid weekly and at the end of the month you get your "big cheque" which has all of your over time and extra bits. Its not unheard of for Gardaí 3 years (not including training) in to be earing the guts of 50k a year at the rank of Garda.

There are lots of other little benifits such as they don't pay tolls, trains or busses. Banks fall over them selfs to give them loans and mortgage's. There's loads of health insurance and life assuarance packages availbale to them which also cover their families.

The Gardai should be paid more.

Within about 2 years you will be in the 40-50k before tax mark. With overtime, subistance and travel allowances.
