Hey guys hoping some of you can help me out here, had a look around the other threads but i'm getting more confused. Here's the situation..

Just moved into a new house, there is a sky satellite mounted on the house, landlord said its from the previous tenna:confused but now its the property of the house. The cable still runs through the house. My question is

    1. Can I buy a decoder box that would be able to receive channels without a subscription using that satellite
    2. Is that legal ?
    3. What kind of channels can I get?
    4. Is it easy to set up, just plug in and go?
    5. Any recommendations on what type of box to get and where to get it?

Any help on this would be great.

The FAQs cover what's possible using a dish and a FTA (Free To Air) installation in pretty good detail.

It's not actually the Sky, satellite, it's Astra at 28.2 east. You can tune in non-Sky channels.

Make sure the dish still has its LNB attached, that's the bit at the end of the arm attached to the dish where the cable goes in.

Yes no problem legally, if they're not encrypted. (So: no RTE TV, C4, Sky channels, or Sky Movies or Sky Sports, no national Geo or history channel. You must pay Sky for those)

BBC1-4, ITV1,2,4, Film 4, news , shopping & religious channels. Also lots of radio including RTE Radio.

Yes, once you've told the tuner it's pointed at Astra at 28.2, or Astra 2, it should tune most channels.

It must be DVB-S tuner, even a cheap one <100 euro will give good results if you're not adventurous. Avoid people who tell you their boxes get NTL for free. Check FAQs.
