Hi lads, I need a bit of advice as my head is mush after researching all the different boxes out there I'm none the wiser.

So can somebody please recommend a box to get.

    My requirements are.....

I want to be able to watch all the usual Sports programmes etc.
I want the box to include a harddive (preferably 160 gb)
I want to be able to record programmes etc
I want to be able to transfer films etc from my laptop onto the box's Harddrive and play them on my (scart) TV.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you want to watch Sky Sports and/or Setanta, then your choices are narrowed down to just a Sky+, SkyHD or the UPC PVR box.

If you want 160GB, then that rules out Sky+ as it only has 80GB personal storage. I dunno the HDD size of the UPC PVR.

Transferring films from another source onto HDD is a no-no with any Sky box, and I doubt if a UPC box will let you either so uhm, that's all the options ruled out!

Maybe look at standalone PVR's which have HDD's and DVD Recorders. Not sure if any of these allow transfer from a PC, maybe some do (Kiss maybe?). Drawback if you use a standalone PVR, is that you'll be stuck only being able to record what you watch with digital TV.

Maybe a Sky+ box and some sort of media box for PC AVI/Divx transfers..

I was thinking Dreambox 7020, would that work for all the requirements?

    Only reliabley the Free Channels.
You can also fit a larger disk to Sky+

Various dual tuner PVRs with 320G disks and even built in DVD writers exist and can allow ethernet transfer from your laptop. It's supposed to be possible to use the Sky card with them via a Dragon CAM. But not for fainthearted and even if it works today, it might not tomorrow. It's legal (on Satellite, but not Cable) as you can only watch what you have subscribed to on the real Sky card. The card may need to be in a real Sky box sometimes. Conflicting reports.

YOu could have a Sky+ (for pay TV) and a 2 tuner PC or setbox PVR also (that has analogue capture to transfer from Sky+) for FTA channels.
