Tried to call them to ask them but get a recorded message to say that mailbox is full, does anyone know with the offer how much you have to pay each month, is it the line rental only? Not very clear in their page.

I don't have them but if you look in the broadband forum all the customer are very happy. check in Tech > Nets & Comms > Broadband

Thanks Nava - I only had a quick look, but it appears you have to take a two-year contract to get one year free. You can get six months from with a one-year and three months free with a six-month contract...

Smart Broadband customer here and I have nothing but praise for them, no problems at all (even with the threatened bankruptcy deal earlier in year).
Great value for the service they provide.

Yeah I third that as well, I'm with Smart, the broadband speed is steady and reliable, always works consistently at the stated speed (the speed they give is more so you're actually surfing at 3/4mb) I'm thinking of leaving Smart and signing up again for this offer though! I feel I'm losing out when new customers are getting these offers! (Which by the way, I never got!) It's not only the broadband what about the "Unlimited Local & National Calls"? All for €35.36? I'm paying more than that for broadband alone, I'm phoning them first thing Monday morning! Disgruntled customer! :D

We're sorry but it appears Smart Broadband is not currently available in your area.
    Typical

How quick are they to switch over from your current provider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Smart usually say connection takes up to 25 days, in reality though many are connected within 10 days.

Anyone know if they offer slower speeds? I had a lot of problems after BT decided to give me a free speed upgrade to 3mbit without bothering to see if the copper in my area could handle the extra speed. Line can only accomadate 2mbit.
That offer is great....sick and tired of handing over 50 p/m to BT for the same package...only sticking point is the apparent nightmare in changing DSL providers and BT's inability to cancel contracts and billing...

Does anybody know if there unlimited local and national costs are only to other smart customers or to any other phone. I tried to look in their T&C's but couldn`t find that answer.

I was wondering that too. The T&Cs mention Smart-2-Smart calls being free, but the way the offer is worded it suggests all local and national calls. Also does anyone know how much the cost goes up by when the free period expires?

All Smart to Smart calls are free anyway.

Yes, you can request a speed downgrade using the Smart Support Forum if you need it. I don't think there's any problem getting that.

Do you still need to change your landline phone number if you want to get Smart broadband or have they rectified that ?

I must warn people here, they have not been reliable for everybody. When eircom cut some Smart customers off and returned them a few days later, my phone line and broadband went dead for 3 MONTHS! I couldn't even call 999. Had to get councillors etc in before someone was finally to the exchange to sort it out.
I stuck with them because of their cheapness, great speeds, no contention and no upper limit, and expected that never to happen again. Last weekend I was trying to work on some college projects and the internet wouldn't connect. I messed around with the settings for hours before deciding it was definitely not me that was the problem. Thought of checking the smart forum on my phone and lo and behold another problem at the exchange had me down for the entire weekend, when I have the most free time for college work.
The support line is Mon-Fri so the only way of finding out is through their website, which is ironic because the internet's down.

There were only a few cases of the 3 month situation. Everybody in Marino/Clontarf I think were effected last weekend.

My dad though was never disconnected at all. Lives 10 minutes away but he's on a different exchange. Maybe if you'd be on the Clontarf exchange you should consider all of this first.

I had a similar issue with that BT upgrade, but I think the ADSL2 that smart uses works a lot better... does for me anyhoo... running a 4Mb line now.
It's a lot cheaper too, but as mentioned above... you're taking your chances reliability-wise... in all the years with eircom, I don't recall a single day of phone-line outage... but with smart I've had one or two incidents where I'd have no landline all weekend, which really takes the píss. (although I've been with them more than a year, so one or two in that timeframe maybe isn't that bad)
The change-over was ridiculous (at the time anyway, not sure what it's like now), between cancelling my old broadband and getting up and running with smart broadband... I basically spent a month offline or using dialup.
Also make sure you're happy paying by direct debit, since it's all they offer for broadband customers.

All things considered though, I'm happy with Smart.

That Smart offer sounds great but I presume it is only 36 euro until the free broadband period is up. How much is it after that? I looked on the Smat website and couldnt find out.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 27,316 CMod ✭✭✭✭spurious

Mine costs €44 a month total for 6MB.

Mine is €39 for 4Mb though due to distance from exchange, it's really about 3.5Mb. Still damn good for the price though with the lack of cap and contention not being much of an issue.

I'll be moving in the next few months, and I'll be sorry to see it go :(

Gazzer here's the full Terms and Conditions of the offer.

I think I've worked out the deal on offer:

    Line Rental: €25.36

Inclusive local and national calls package: €10.00

    Free Broadband: €0

    Equals Promotion Price of €35.36

So, if I'm right, the after-promotion price should be €50.36 (€35.36 plus €15 for broadband)

Assuming you can't remove the inclusive calls part after the free period ends, I calculate the pro-rata price to be €42.86 per month for the 24 month contract term.(€35.36 x 12 months = €424.32) plus (€50.36 x 12 months = €604.32) Divided by 24 months.

So excluding line rental that's just €17.50 extra per month for 3mb broadband and unlimited local and national calls for 24 months. Only €2.86 extra than the regular Smart price for 3mb broadband. That's a very good deal. :D

The 3Mb broadband is €15 a month, so add that on to see what it will cost overall.

Enter your line stats here to see what your line is capable of. Smart use adsl2 whereas eircom use adsl.

This has been said before but, although I understand that the promotion would be primarily aimed at new customers, where does it say existing customers aren't eligible? I can't find that on the web site or in the terms and conditions. After all, even existing customers would still have to agree to a 2 year contract to get the full benefit of the offer.
