personally im a pc girl so i dont know much about how the ds works but my mum got one in the u.s and a socket adapter to charge it back here... but it wont charge.. i can only assume its a voltage issue.. but then other products work with the u.s to euro adapter...?
has anyone had this happen before? is the only way to solve this to buy a ds adapter over here?
also is there any way i can check if its the ds adapter that is faulty?

I bought one from US. Bought a USB charge lead on ebay for about EUR10 including postage, and then a 3 pin plug to USB cable adaptor in Smyths for EUR7. Works perfect. I'm sure there are cheaper ways now.
The above set up works fine. No voltage issue.
In fact, so good we bought another one the same way.

Voltage. The US DS mains adaptor works on a 110v supply only (american), whereas the DS sold here, as far as I know, will work with 110v or 240v.

Mains and USB adaptors can be got from www.dealextreme.com very cheap but will take up to 3 weeks to arrive. If she's in a hurry to get gaming again I'd suggest picking up a cheap USB charger in a game, toy or music shop.

No it doesn't, DS has a variable voltage power supply so it can take either as long as you have an adapter.
