Its a bit of a drive from cherbourg, have a look at google earth, or mappy I think it works out at about four and a half hours, (only about 2 hours from roscoff)

We went to Benodet (near enough to where you are going) 2 years ago, and it was a 2 hour drive to roscoff taking it easy.

Speaking from experience, having taken 2 children (now 10 & 5) to france for the last 4 years,
    (1) get sat nav (takes ALL the stress out of wondering where the hell you are / going, one less thing to distract you on unfamiliar roads,
    (2) if you can get twin screen dvd player or old laptop with a load of kids movies (keeps them quiet in the car and when it rains, and it does in brittany  it will keep them quiet in the mobile). I got a cheapish twin screen dvd setup and friends, relatives and neighbours have all used it (always get nice bottles of wine when they come back :D)
    (3) if you have or can borrow, get a roof box, you will have more room in the boot on the way back for wine and other bargins you will be bringing back.
    (4) when on the ferry bring the kids pillows with you, helps settle them down, pillows on the old normandy ferry were flat.
    (5) nintendo ds lite = life saver!!
