    Hey peoples,

I'm in the market for an external hard drive (sorry if I'm in the wrong place:o), but I'm a bit clueless about what's good etc.

I was looking at this one: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=333054
Can anyone tell me if this is a good deal?
Or, if it's not, can anyone advise me on a better one?
My price range is about €100-€150

    Any help appreciated!

On sale in Maplins for €125 if you are near one. Same price when you consider shipping from komplett of at least €10....

Glad I bought mine there: mine was a dud that died after 2 days and I got it replaced very easily, took less than 5 mins in the store.

Maplins is a good option and also Tesco have Philips 500gb for €119 too. Best bets are Clarehall and Finglas in Dublin. Not sure about country stores.

I'm using a couple of these & find them great.

The only thing to watch for is that they come with some software preinstalled & are formatted to FAT32.

I just formatted mine to NTFS & away I went.

Another vote for the Western Digital MyBook range, have a few of them and they work well. :)

Have to agree. Have 2 external 500gb ones ! And not a bother with them.

Yup, WD Mybooks are great, just make sure you format to NTFS to get full transfer speeds.

Thanks all, I'm going to order a Western Digital one.
Although I'm sure I'll be back to ask about formatting to NTFS :o

The FAT32 file system is what the drive will be probably formatted to, it has restrictions like 4GB is the maximum file size that can be stored so you might be better off using NTFS.

Just plug it into a USB port on your PC & power it up.

It will pop up as another drive letter & will appear in My Computer.

Right click on it & choose the option to Format.

A new window will open & it will have a little drop down option under "File System" so you can choose NTFS from there.

Would this lose whatever files are already on the drive?

    Yes, absolutely.

He is talking about a new drive that comes formatted to FAT32 & has some Google software preinstalled.

Yep, if you do get a "Next One" you could always format it to NTFS, then transfer everything from your original one to the new one, then format the original one to NTFS too. All happy ;)

You might be surprised? It wouldn't take that long.

Run it before you hit the sack some night & let it do it as you sleep.
