What's more surprising is that there was someone left in the social welfare office at 1pm on a friday afternoon. The union will not be happy.

More than 200 employees were evacuated from eBay (NSDQ: EBAY)'s Hamilton Avenue campus in San Jose, Calif., on Wednesday morning following the discovery of a suspicious package.

The evacuation began about 8:55 a.m. PST, according to eBay. The company's PayPal and Skype services weren't affected.

Law enforcement officers determined that the package was harmless. "The device was disrupted at about 12:30 p.m.," said Sgt. Nick Muyo, a San Jose Police officer. "It was not an explosive device."

Muyo declined to comment on whether a bomb-defusing robot was brought in, saying the police did not discuss specific methods and tactics.

"This was simply a case of a package that was suspicious that nobody could identify," said Muyo. "So we handled this by the numbers."

Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms spokesperson Nina Delgadillo said that ATF agents were present with a K-9 unit.

"The affected areas of campus have since been reopened," eBay said in a statement.

EBay didn't immediately respond to requests for further information.

On Halloween night, 2006, a pipe bomb shattered the window of a building that's part of eBay's PayPal operation. A news report at the time indicated that 26 people were evacuated and that no one was inured in the explosion.

That investigation has been suspended for lack of leads. Muyo said the pipe bomb case appears likely to remain on hold unless someone comes forward with new information about the blast.

... surely the strategic value of bombing Fairview park would be much higher if they had waited till _after_ the playground was rebuilt?

Walked past there at five to eight on the way into work in town - heard it on the wirelss. I live near the park so was freaked out. Waht if a child picked it up not knowing what it was (since theres a playground nearby).

This is why I always ask people to attach the text of the story.

    First link:
The army bomb disposal team has dismantled two viable pipebombs in Fairview Park in Dublin.

A third device was discovered last night in Ronanstown during a planned search by gardaí.

The devices in Fairview Park were discovered in bushes by a man out walking his dog at around 8am.

Members of the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team were called to the scene shortly afterwards.

Fairview Park has been reopened to the public and garda forensic experts are now investigating the remnants of the devices.

Nobody was injured during the operation. A spokesman for the Defence Forces said it is not clear who was responsible for the devices.

The Ronanstown device was similar to the ones discovered in Fairview Park.

Gardaí are appealing for anybody who saw any unusual activity in the Fairview Park area to contact them at Clontarf Garda Station on 01-6664800.

    Screw you, Hiroshima
    .

    Second link:
The Defence Forces have said a suspect package left at a Social Welfare Office in Ballyfermot in Dublin was not dangerous.

The bomb disposal team examined an envelope that was delivered to the employment exchange this morning.

However, the suspicious powder on the package was not dangerous as had been feared.

Gardaí and the emergency services had attended the scene.
    Scott Ian refused to comment.
