I'm going to be moving the 8800GTX from my HTPC into my main PC, so i'm looking to replace it with a cheap card that will still allow me to watch HD movies in 1080p.

What would be the best card for this?

    google 8400gs

as far as i know that does h264 hardware decoding like the 8500gt and 8600gt, but have a search to confirm

36euro for passive ones on some german sites so shouldnt be much dearer on komplett etc

passive would be good. Cut down on noise levels. I'm really just looking for a spare for the time being. Also something that would play the odd game in 720p.

Something in the region of €100.

im not 100% sure on this...but can ya not jus judge it on the max resolution of ur card? 1080dpi if ya work it out i about similar to 1680*1050 i think (depending on screen size). can ya not jus look for the best card that combines maximum output resolutiom with minimum price? or wat does "h264 hardware decoding" mean?

hardware decoding means it doesnt rely just on the cpu to decode the high definition picture, so its good for ppl who's cpu's arent the fastest. Using a core2duo e6300 and an 8500gt, i can watch BBC HD with only 15% cpu being used. If i didnt have the 8500gt, BBC HD would be unwatchable. Dont know about these 8400,8500,8600 cards and gaming tbh. Passive 8500gt's are about 70/80 euro in germany anyways.

Check out a passive 8600GT I reckon. 8400GS is cheapest (and yes it does decoding too), but crap for (new) games, likewise for 8500GT.
