"Second life" - What is it?

I've just read this article about Tourism Ireland launching a marketing campaign in "second life".... so i started to look into it... and i just can't conceptualise it at all (it doesn't help that my graphics card is duff).

So, from youtube and the website and all other bits n pieces I'm gathering that it's The Sims except you're a sim????
but if you want to talk to someone you know do you just message them or do you have to walk to them given the supposed second life reality of this virtual environment?

    Anyone use this at all??

Sort of like the sims, but more interactive. You can own land, vehicles etc. You can create stuff, sell stuff - it has it's own economy.

You can message people or "talk" to them in world - you can use voice messaging etc as well.
