A friend asked me to post here to see if anyone is interested in this car. It is in worse condition than he thought when he bought it, so he isn't interested in trying to get it restored. Apparently the chassis rails are rusted out, so it is probably only good for parts.
Can you guys comment please? What is it worth? Any takers? It is in New Ross and I can post a picture if needed.
    Thanks.

Definitely not metallic grey. Picture attached. It is kind of a cream colour but flaking off quite a bit. Maybe a bad respray?

I don;t know this particular car, but I did know a metallic grey fintail which was being sold a couple of years ago in the Bray area.
The owner asked me then at the time, if I could assist in selling it for him. He had bought the car in good faith but it turned out to be in very poor condition.... which sounds very much like the OP's friends car.

At the time I kindly declined the offer, afraid to be getting the sort of comments as I just got from Dades :D;), so it obviously didn't work... ;)

I could be interested if the prices is ridiculously low, judging by the state of it it should be. I reckon its really a parts car !

PM me the price and I'll take it from there, I'll be in Wexford tomorrow too !

How about you make an offer or if a few people can decide on a consensus?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

I remember seeing that car or its twin outside Blarney a few years ago and it was pretty rough then. I'd go 100 euros on it if its any good to him.:)

Hmmm seems a shame to condemn a car to breaking just cos one isnt brave enough to go welding ;) Actually, what is the parts (especially panels) situation with fintails? I have wanted one ever since i saw them as "baddies" cars in James bond films...but it'd have to be black!

.........you can get all the parts, but through dealers at dealer prices ! How does €700-900/corner grab you ?

Yeah I'd hate to see the car scrapped but I'd prefer some more photos before making an offer. Does it start/drive at all ?

Is that the price of wings??? What are they made from, solid Gold???!!! What about sills??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Yeah thats the price of each wing............cheaper for a Boeing !!

Sills are made from solid inobtainium but batches are made from time to time, price depends on who has what !

Nice car that - any pictures of the floor / chassis / sills. I don't really need another car but I would double Junkyard's offer of €100 :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,575 ✭✭✭junkyard

    Ok so, 201 euros.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,266 ✭✭✭MercMad

Hey look if this is going to turn into an eBay thing then I'll switch on my autobid !

    €201.50

and I remember seeing another similiar blue fintail left outside a railway station about 2 or 3 years ago on the Cork-Cobh line. Next time I saw it was at the station house itself. It was left hand drive and was on original Irish plates. Looking at the picture of the car here, where was it originally from? the door mirrors are neither fitted on the doors or at the front of the wings?

That car is still in the garage attached to the house, I tried buying it and the owner told me it was for parts for another car he was restoring. And there's an e-type Jag sitting in a garage a stones throw from it which the owner denies is there for some reason and an SS Jag a short distance from there that was eventually thrown into the tide and left to rot, honestly I don't know why some people are left have cars at all as they don't have any mass on them. The Merc was a German embassy car at one stage, I scrapped another Merc which was an embassy car too a few years ago and it had a phone system built into it.

    Interesting stuff !

Firstly the Fintails should have one mirror only, driver's side at the fly window, hard to see if its there or not in that shot !

There must be a good few around that had Government/Embassy connections but I have only ever seen one or two with original Irish reg's unfortunately. The phone's were available on Mercs since the early 60's but I didn't think there ever was a network over here capable of supporting same. They did work in Germany, some parts of Europe and the US !

Shame to hear about those cars in Cork, total waste, I cant understand these owners !

I remember I was watching, about 3 years ago, "Reeling in the Years" and it happened to show a scene from I think 1966 where the Government were auctioning off all the old ministerial/official cars and there were the usual crop of Fords etc... but also a fleet of Fintails which the commentator reported were all bought by Des Kelly (he of carpet man fame, or his father). Obviously they had all the old reg numbers and I'm still surprised that one has never shown up in Club circles !

Okay so this car is a 4 door car yeah ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,398 ✭✭✭iwb

Hi Guys, Sorry I didn't get back sooner. To be honest, I forgot about the car until I drove in today and it is gone. I talked to my friend and he sold it for €200 to someone.
I now have to check out why I am not getting email notification of new posts and pm's.
By the way, my dad has been looking for a W114 Merc for a long time now. From memory, it is a pillarless coupe and I think he wanted a 200 or 220. Does that make sense? One sold here last year or the year before that would have suited him perfectly. He thought it was too expensive but since then has modified his estimate of that.
Any pointers as to where he should be looking or anyone got one to sell? He would probably want one in near perfect condition but would consider doing some light work on it.

iwb - W114s were the 6cyl versions, W115 were their 4cyl brethren. All coupes were 6 cyls. Coupes, AFAIK, came in 230, 250 and 280 guises. Not that im touting this thread, but i am the owner of a 72 W114 230 saloon, which im thinking of selling. I know you said your dad is on the lookout for the 2 door, but if you want to have a chat, drop me a pm.

    cheers,
    tony

    ...............I'd have paid €300 !!

I know where there is a project 250C for sale, original Irish reg too AFAIK. I needs quite a bit, but its been stored indoors for probably 10 years or so and needs probably minor bodywork before re-asembly !

The guy offered it to me about 3 years ago for €2500, I'm sure he'd take less now !

The main thing with all of these cars is body rot, bulkhead and sills mainly so when looking at a seemingly good car take a poke around it enthusiastically. Even good bodyshop men have been taken in by what these cars can hide !

I personally would only by a perfect example or a total project !

@ Galwaytt.............did you manage to get any photos yet ??
